I prefer Albert Bartlett. It has the ring of an old-school manager.

Damn it! I've been trying to think of ways to use those 2 names for days. All I'm left with now it Maris Piper.

Much as I rate and wanted Bruce. It doesn't look like there a magic bullet for our problems. We rode our luck on saturday and barely looked like scoring. If we are above half way anytime soon that will be a big step in the right direction.

Luck or game management ?

I only listened tonight - but there did seem more a plan - even if the plan was never going to be pretty. We had a couple of good chances before the penalty.

A week ago we were 10 points from the play offs - now we are 6th....

The fact he didn't panic and throw all his strikers on with no formation tonight is already a step up!!

Today Bruce showed that not only is he a quick learner but he's a smart old fox tactically too. He explained after the game that he didn't think the lads could press them all game so he decided to sit back in the first half and then let them attack in the second half. So already he's done good by his promise to address the "fitness" issue by setting them up to ensure they aren't out on their feet in the last ten minutes.

We also appeared to play a typical "counter attack" game and none of this passing sideways rubbish. This to me is also a positive move because we don't have a quality "number ten" right now who the team can turn to for creativity so it's much better to look for space in-behind the opposition in order to get the best out of our strikers.

All in all it's been a good start from Brucey and long may it continue.

4 out of 6 points under Bruce so far if we keep that ratio up we should get about 75 points this season, might get us into the playoffs who knows ?

Yup - the pickings are that slim.

Seriously though, early signs are that he could end up just that. He's always struck me as a manager who suffers from bad luck & who could find a winning balance in a team but couldn't maintain it. Now that he's our manager I'm paying more attention to what he says & how he conveys himself & he does exude an air of experience that must have a settling affect on the players. If we were ever going to have Brucie as our manager I think this elder statesman point of his career may prove to be his most effective.

Steve Bruce...........

“I did nearly three years at Sunderland which seems like a long time for them!
“I did four years at Hull, seven years down the road, and a couple of years at Wigan.
“But managing a club like this is huge. It’s a real privilege.
“I’ve been waiting 20 years to be at a club of this size so I will give it everything I can.”

He's gone up another notch for me. Keep it up fatty.

I have to admit I was dead against him but he's really growing on me. He's doing the right things and saying the right things.
He's heaped praise on the young players when they've deserved it, he's not thrown Grealish under the bus like previous managers (although I suspect that one more fuck up and words will be had) and he's identified what's wrong and is making headway in changing that.

Naturally, it's results on the pitch that count and a few loses will see things quickly swing against him.

But he's putting credit in the bank and so far I can't fault him.

Press Conference hot topics: Bruce on derby buzz, Blues banter and Second City pride

Manager Steve Bruce spoke to the media ahead of the Birmingham City derby encounter on Sunday.

His views are below.

On the size of this derby…

It’s our Second City. Villa v Blues will always be right up there.

Both sets of supporters are representing this area – and the clubs of the area. There’s a rivalry and there will always be banter – we’re ready for the banter.

It’s our Second City. Villa v Blues will always be right up there as a derby.

Let’s hope they shout as loud as they want and it’s the spectacle as a football occasion that everyone wants to see.
For all the supporters going on both sides, yes shout loud and make your feelings known but remember to behave yourselves because that’s important for the image of the city and both clubs.

On the magnitude of the game itself…

You can’t play it down. It’s who handles it the best.

You have to be fully committed because both sets of supporters demand that.

Of course, in and around you, you have to remember to play the game because sometimes you can get lost in the occasion.

Before you know it’s passed you by and you haven’t taken part in it.

So it’s who can produce that bit of magic on the day. Let’s hope it’s one of our players and they can be the hero on the day.

On Birmingham City’s team…

They are tough, uncompromising and resilient.

Gary Rowett has done a smashing job over the past few years under difficult circumstances.

They are everything I would expect them to be.

But we will be ready for that challenge, I am sure of that.

On the injury situation…

It’s too early for Tommy Elphick and Micah Richards.

Albert Adomah is fine. He will be in the squad.

On the reception he’s expecting…

I am sure it will absolutely wonderful. I am sure they will be singing my name from the rafters.

I am used to a  bit of stick – I have had it throughout my career.

I have had stick – as long as it’s banter, that’s what football is all about.

Deep down I know that they will have some sort of respect because, to be fair, I have been in football for 40 years and practically 10 of them were involved with the Blues.

I am expecting a bit of stick. I just hope – and I challenge them – to come up with something original.

We have heard all the chants before – have they got it in their locker to really come up with something original which will brighten my day.

On how to win the derby…

You have to go and perform – perform when you’re under pressure.

Both sets of players will be under enormous pressure to perform in front of their own support.

Away from home, especially, we have to stand up and be ready for what they will throw at us.

I am quietly confident we can do that.

On whether he will feel strange returning…

I knew three weeks ago that it was around the corner.

That’s what we are in football for – the big occasion.

It’s only a good occasion if you win it.

I will do my utmost to make sure we win this big derby.

On whether Gabby Agbonlahor might be involved…

It’s something I will think of.

It’s fair to say I put him on a programme when I walked through the door of how he can be in better shape. I don’t think I will waiver from that.

He came in on Wednesday and said he wanted to travel with us so that shows good signs from him.

He is a good player who has played at the top level all his life and scored goals.

It might be a bit early for him but he will be with us.

He’s been a good player over the years. The challenge for him now is getting back to where he was as a player.

He’s been caught up in the downward slide over the last couple of years.

We have got him on the programme and he’s done everything we have asked of him. I hope that continues.

Was a great press conference. He's basically shut the noses up by telling them to come up with something original.

"Not potato head?" Asks the interviewer.
He just laughed. "My mother thinks I'm quite handsome"

Hahahahaha. The bloke is growing on me.

It's utterly bizarre that he doesn't play Tish while Gardner and Westwood are playing week in and week out.

Tish is about 10 x the player both of them combined. In fact I'd rather see a 1 man midfield of Tish than a two-man midfield of Gardner and Westwood and I'm not even kidding.
