Who Will be the Next Villa Manager
Re: Next Villa Manager - Who WILL it be ?
He won promotion. Does that not count? Is it not our goal?
Take away Leicester and Pearson not only hasn't won anything - he's not completed an entire season!

Sure he has a fine CV - But he has nearly has always worked under a DOF either by name (someone else finds the players). I also don't think he will prove a strong enough personality in the dressing room.
Let the excuse making commence.
What's happened to the Comoli rumour? wasn't he supposed to be coming with RDM?
To compare RDM over Pearson to Garde over Allardyce is actually quite funny
Seem to remember people saying the same when Allardyce went to Sunderland - who's laughing now ?
He went to Sunderland before Tim was sacked though so what has that got to do with us?
True. But Sherwood was already a dead man walking. I put that one down to the shortcomings of Tom Fox.
I m glad you're pleased with RDM. I do have concerns however with base if he is starting from, can he really stamp his authority on the club ? - re organise from top to bottom on and off the field ? - thats why I have my doubts. His record is pretty decent by as he ever walked into such an environment as he no faces ? - I don't think he has.
If he get the results - then great. If he doesn't he should be accountable, no excuses. Its a tough division next year - but equally were a giant in the league - I can't have us giving Roberto 'time', if were 13th/14th come Christmas time.
His job will start and end with the first team. He won't be re-organising the club top to bottom, it's not 1984!!
Agreed. Actually 1987 when Graham Taylor did such a re org with such dramatic results.
TBH - I don't think he will 100% run the first team. I wouldn't be surprised if a DOF is brought in.

Yes thats the one glimmer.
As I have said a few posts back. I fear for him and the base he is starting from. There are a lot of issues and I m really not sure he has faced those before, or if he has the personality to put things in order. You can't knock his results - I just don't feel he is right for us.
Still its done now UTV.

Just delighted it's not Pearson. Guy has been a failure 90% of his career and is an unstable character by the looks of it. RDM will bring calmness to the club and bring a a philosophy developed through years of playing at the top level and also managing there too.

I've always said that with Lerner still owner and/or no cash to spend then a shit-kicker like Pearson, although not my favourite person, would fit the bill.
Hopefully we now have greater aspirations which is why we've targeted someone who has previous success in our division but with European experience

I for one am very excited at the appointment of RDM and can't wait to see him on the Villa Park touchline with the swagger he possesses. I think all Villa fans need to now unite, get behind the new manager and owner and look forward to a new dawn without Randy Lerner destroying our great club UTV!

Re: Next Villa Manager - Who WILL it be ?
If we've managed to get someone like RDM at this stage, then he's obviously heard something - and, more to the point, believed it - that tells him that this club will offer him the opportunity to manage at the very top again.
If managers like pube-head, pug-nose and the Mumbler can get work in football after what happened at a villa, then Roberto won't have a shortage of offers. That he's picked us speaks volumes about what's going on behind the scenes.
I do believe given our circumstances, this is the best manager that we could attract.

Great
We need a whole re build and and long term plan. He's never been at a club longer than 12 months really

You would think any manager offered the Villa job would worry about the squad we have and getting them out of the Championship let’s be honest they have not covered themselves with glory and the pressure will be on to succeed, he must be confident of funds, board, assistance.

Well he lives in leamington spa - and theres probably a big salary on offer - why on earth would he turn that down ? - if it goes tits up - he's gets a big payoff, there will be talk of a toxic dressing room, and dodgy directors to take the flak. He can't possibly loose.

Re: Next Villa Manager - Who WILL it be ?
Yes he can. His record as a manager goes right down th shitter. People will say he failed to get rid of the dross, he failed to appoint the right players, he failed to get the team to gel, he failed to get us promoted.
And, as a young manager, why would he risk what he's achieved so far for that? A pay off? So the rest of his career is tarnished and his prospects damaged for a pay off?
Nah, I'm not buying it.

Like I say he knows what he's walking into. Promotion at the first attempt is the stated target of the owner. If he does that fine.
My concern is I don't believe he has done anything requiring such a big rebuilding job before.
I fear we will have a season of
"he needs better coaching staff'
"he walked into a mess'
"were only 4 points of the play offs"
"Lots of injuries"
"he didn't buy the players"
"to much interference from above"
Needs to get results pretty quickly.
Have to say I don't think hes right for us - sorry guys.

Re: Next Villa Manager - Who WILL it be ?
If we get RDM, I'm behind him, good luck.
We have been linked with 3 candidates that would all have been ok on merit, with a new owner we need a statement and RDM is high profile without being top drawer.
With commitment from the club and a much better coaching team and scouting network he will be ok.
I hope he has learnt his trade well because he is going to need everything he's seen and heard and a lot of luck.

Harsh. Well respected Villa site.
And you spelled "neanderthals" wrong.
And you've been very aggressive in your posting.

How long has the poll been up for? I ask because RDM was only added as an option on our poll after everyone else had been added. Although a late addition, he's now leading!
Granted, not many have voted so it's too small a sample to be of much use as a guide but I think it could be the case that Pearson was a rock-solid favourite when the season ended, before RDM was even on the radar and it's taken a while for people to change their mindset.

Re: Next Villa Manager - Who WILL it be ?
Let's work on two assumptions here and say that RDM is going to be our next manager and he'll be able to pick his own backroom staff. i.e....bye bye Paddy Riley.
Do we know anything about who his assistants might be? I ask because my biggest doubt over Pearson was that his staff are still at Leicester and I couldn't see them wanting to leave.
Will Roberto be able to bring in the people he wants and, more importantly, are those people any good??

What has he done bar get promotion from league one and the championship and just about keep Leicester up? Lambert did that and all in three seasons (unlike Pearson). Pearson did nothing special at Hull and has hardly been a miracle worker at the other clubs he's manage either such as Southampton.

Well the fact is he's got experience of taking a club up at the first attempt..so why shouldn't he feel confident when 50m is apparently on the table as well? And you don't need to apologise!!..RDM is coming in whether you, me or anyone likes it or not...so people need to get used it and get behind the team now imo.

Re: Next Villa Manager - Who WILL it be ?
Don't really want to keep going on about Pearson now, because it's Di Matteo's job and I'm just as happy with him as I would have been with NP, they both have advantages and disadvantages, I'd say Di Matteo is better tactically and we might be able to attract a better class of player with him charge.
As for Pearson's past I don't really call rebuilding Leicester twice getting them promoted keeping them in the division and building much of the squad that went onto the win the league a failure. Also stabilized Hull and they were in the play off positions when he left.
Anyway hope Di Matteo can bring in his preferred coaching staff, apparently Newton is highly rated, although I don't really know much about him myself.

Tell you what Smetro, I totally get your point about the task in hand but I would say that's a massive challenge for anyone, regardless of who they are. I know 1987 was a root and branch rebuild but football is a different world now what with players salaries and agents, all sorts of financial rules and the stratosphere of the really big clubs. There would have to have been a star in the East when whoever takes charge was born as it needs a miracle to achieve anything at VP nowadays. What I would say is that anyone who has played football at any amateur level knows players often go to a club because of the manager. Just because pros get a fortune they still often think that way. I reckon RDM would attract a different quality of player to NP, players that might be willing to play in the Championship for a season who would not previously considered it. I think RDM would bring that influence. Yes he needs the right team around him as well as the right team playing for him, I'm hopeful that will happen.
One thing I've learnt over the years supporting Villa is I've stopped trying to guess who is a good fit to manage Villa, we might as well just roll dice or flip a coin, cos it's a bloody mystery what will constitute a successful formula.
