Ah well, at least this time it was only three, progress of sorts. Chelsea are in a different league to us, I thought we didn't do too badly. Same again next week and then maybe we'll start seeing Benteke...

Re: Chelsea v Aston Villa all in one thread
Anyone expecting anything less than today's result was a moron and wearing rose specs, Chelsea are too good for anyone in the league this season. Mourinho has made amazing signings and will walk to the title.
This result doesn't reflect badly on us at all. If anything I don't think we played particularly badly at all, just outclassed.

It's not us losing that grates, it's the lack of anything up top, and before anyone tells me to get a grip because it was Chelsea, it's been an on-going problem for years.
Absolute fucking years.
Still, no shame in being beat by Chelsea, I would be stunned if they didn't win the league and can only see Citeh as being anywhere near them.

I don't think it makes someone a moron - we have a respectable record against Chelsea, I'm always more confident against them than the inferior sides of Man U and Spurs (inferior teams to Chelsea that is, not us) and while I didn't think we would win (despite going that way on the prediction league, 'just in case'!) I certainly wouldn't describe anyone as a moron just because they thought we might do something today.

Our respectable record is a fair point but this Chelsea is a different gravy. If they don't win the league someone should be shot, they've been immense all season and I really think anyone who thought were would get anything out of them was dreaming

Yes you've made that clear
They still won't beat us at the Villa. Jose never wins at the Villa

Expected result.
I actually went for a 3-1 in the prediction league but if truth be told we didn't really look like scoring for much of the game even when Chelsea took their foot off the gas in the second half.
I'm not sure we look much better than last season but the true test of that will come when we get Benteke and Kozak back and we get out of this horrible run of fixtures to play teams below the top six.
For me that will define this season and Lambert's tenure with us.

Expected a loss. Agree with Morpheus above that games in a few weeks will be more revealing.

Agree. Today was a write off. As is next week. Then it gets important and telling again particularly as we should be full strength.Morpheus wrote:Expected result.

Re: Chelsea v Aston Villa all in one thread
OK my assessment of yesterday. Villa look neat & tidy in possession & our defensive shape more organised. Cleverley looks calm on the ball & some of his movement into space was good (not something the team is good at actually). We do seem to lack any real ambition in these games & with just Gabby up top never really look likely to threaten. Our best opportunities should come from set plays & yet the delivery was pretty awful again (no excuse as that can be practised!). The goals conceded were all pretty poor with the exception of Costa's header & Baker just didn't spot the run of a master predator for the header (no shame in that as many a good centre back will get caught out this season by him). I think we have to consider playing two up top as the ball just keeps coming back at us in deep positions & we end up defending deep.
Finally, I'm starting to get concerned with Guzan's kicking. Keep count of how many times he finds touch from a clearance, even when under no pressure (great in rugby!). Is it time we signed some real competition for the no. 1 jersey?

Re: Chelsea v Aston Villa all in one thread
Good post, Guzan's kicking has been dodgy recently, perhaps he needs to put more time into it in training. Better still why not roll it out or play it short and try to create a bit of confident passing, instead of this kick and hope tactic. Maybe Lambert doesn't think we're good enough to pass it out from the back?roba19 wrote:OK my assessment of yesterday. Villa look neat & tidy in possession & our defensive shape more organised. Agreed, it's regularly pissed me off how Guzan keeps fucking up his kicks - I watched him yesterday and thought maybe he doesn't realise he's actually right-footed, not left-footed, and that's why he's so crap. I often used to get similarly pissed off at Bosnich when he used the boot - when we signed James I remember thinking "Bloody hell, we've signed a goalie who can throw a ball further than Bozzie could kick one!"
Also agree about the lack of variation. We/he is at it all they time - whack it up top, don't get possession, start backpedalling. Repeat ad nauseum. I think this must come from Lambert but in the absence of Benteke it is very ineffective.

I got slated on Twitter when I said I was massively underwhelmed at his signing. I've seen literally nothing to change my mind though. He works hard off the ball and every now & then scores a spectacular left-foot drive, but that is it.
Every time I see him starting, as well as Weimann/Gabby and, pre-Cleverley at least, N'Zogbia, I basically die a little inside.
Not if I just saw 1 of them, but to see 3/4 on such a consistent basis is pretty soul destroying.

yeah I'm not bowled over by Richardson, he's been completely MIA in the last 2 matches. Think Bacuna would offer more attacking threat in that role

Re: Chelsea v Aston Villa all in one thread
It's tough to judge anything really at the moment as the last two games were hampered by a virus and then an away game against the Champions elect minus our best attacker and defender and with our preparations at least a little disrupted due to the remains of the virus and the closure of the training ground etc... Hardly sufficient preparation to play Chelsea at theirs at the moment.
So i think we can't really judge things until after the international break now although i hope to see improvement of sorts against City with the virus cleared up and proper preparation being possible.
