Re: Promotion discussion thread
Bristol City losing to Bolton is a good result for us, if we can just beat Burton then we will be five points ahead of them. Fingers crossed we're in the top two this time tomorrow.

I didn't realise they played last night and what a result!!
Really need Derbeh and Cardiff to hit a rocky patch as well.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
Derby have Brentford, Norwich, Wednesday and Leeds- all awkward mid to upper half teams that could go either way.
Cardiff have Leeds , Millwall, Bolton and Boro so 3 similar teams to Derby's fixtures and up to last night I'd have said a banker to Bolton but they are putting a run together so who knows.

Apart from Sheff U and Boro losing, it's been a terrible day tbh. Today we had the advantage over everyone else as far as the fixtures were concerned, and though we won, we just didn't make a dent anywhere. Oh well I guess there's always next week. Win that and then it sets up a blockbuster at Fulham the week after.

As I said in one of the threads earlier, today changed very rapidly from making a dent to not losing ground. We didn't, and winning is a habit. I'll be happy to get through the next home game - hosting those knuckle draggers is like being forced to have sex with some gopping skanky 50 year old dockside hooker on your best bedsheets. Something to ensure and you hope you come out clean at the end of it.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
At least we've widened the gap between ourselves and seventh to eight points, effectively nine points when you consider goal difference, so have quite a cushion now in the play-off places. It is a bit dispiriting though to see that Derby and Cardiff both, have been dropping points recently and we've won six in a row, yet we're still not in the top two.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
We need to repeat the feat again i reckon to get a good hold on 2nd, another 6 wins in a row but it's a big ask obviously. We somehow have to get there and create a gap to demoralise some of those teams around us.
Next two are huge!

I know people have said take one game at a time and of course that is the best way. If however, I were to speculate on a month by month basis, looking at the fixtures for feb/march/April I'd say if we can maintain our relative position by end of Feb we'll have done well. March is absolutely the month where we should make up ground as apart from Wolves all fixtures should be winnable. If there's a month that could end up defining our season it has to be April, as we have Derby and Cardiff at home. If we've got things right in the previous 2 months, beating those two could well see us in second with only ourselves to blame if we then slip up thereafter.
As I said this is just idle Sunday morning speculation and the number one immediate priority is sending the mongs back to B9 with the taunts of the Villa fans ringing in their ears after getting thumped by Grealish and co.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
Just realised there's only 48 points to play for, it seems a lot but even if we were to win every match that would put us on 104 points, usually a points haul in the late 80's early 90's is what's needed for second place; I guess we need another 12 wins out of the remaining 16 fixtures at least, maybe 13, so we can't really afford many slip ups at all.
Four games in just a fortnight coming up, which really could make or break our season, need to keep the running going starting on Sunday.

Yes, it just makes you realise what you have to do to get out of this league, you really can't afford any bad run of results.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
Just saw THIS article from a Derby perspective and it lists the next five games for some of the teams involved in the fight.
Wolves
QPR at home
Preston away
Norwich at home
Fulham away
Reading at home
Derby
Norwich at home
Wednesday away
Leeds at home
Reading away
Fulham at home
Villa
Birmingham at home
Fulham away
Preston at home

QPR at home
Cardiff
Millwall away
Bolton at home
Boro at home
Ipswich away

Wolves at home
Derby away
Bristol City
Sunderland at home
Leeds away
Fulham at home
Cardiff away
Wednesday at home
Preston
Brentford away
Wolves at home
Villa away
Ipswich at home
Bolton away
That Fulham schedule is quite interesting!!!. All in all, there may be a lot of slip-ups during this period, it's just a matter of who can rise to the occasion and get the most out of this spell. After the Fulham game we will have faced every side in the top eleven away from home. So that's gonna be a huge bonus for us with fourteen games to go.

This is where squad depth comes into play. And I don't think anyone else in the division has it better than us. Even those melons "Benfica Wanderers" don't have it as good .

Cardiff doing to Milwall want we couldn't do - beating them, and in the process have moved above us in the league. I'm starting to think we'll never get into the automatic promotion places, I mean win six on the bounce, but still only fourth, that tells us something.

Cardiff draw so we are still 3rd but they have the game in hand, need to keep the pressure on with a win on Sunday.

Sundays going to be a bloodbath - as well as 3 points, we need to avoid red cards and season ending injuries.....its going to be a naughty one folks

Re: Promotion discussion thread
A home derby full of hatred and noise, tension and pressure with c42,000 packing out Villa Park is something to behold. For some of the Villa players it's a first time event, but for Tuanzebe and Grabban who have only just joined, I bet they'll be sitting on the bench thinking"Fuck me this is wild!" haha.smetro wrote:Saunders82 wrote:Cardiff draw so we are still 3rd but they have the game in hand, need to keep the pressure on with a win on Sunday.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
Well i certainly didn't expect those results today! Bristol giving up a 3 goal lead at home to Sunderland and both Fulham & Derby surrendering leads against teams you would have to expect them to beat.
Ditto Cardiff of course against Millwall last night.
So an unexpected opportunity to grab that 2nd spot but in reality it also means if we do draw we have held our position.
Fingers crossed we find a way to make it 7 on the bounce which would be some feat!

I think if we stay calm and don't get involved in their dirty tricks then we will win this easily? However life as a Villan is never that straight forward?

Next match will be difficult. Possibly the hardest remaining match we got.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
True, though Wolves at home looks maybe harder? Interesting to see that Wolves still have Cardiff and Fulham away, plus Derby at home. IF we beat Wolves at home, there could be just 8 points between us and it's strange what can happen as gaps close.Joppe84 wrote:Next match will be difficult.
