Match thread: Crystal Palace v Villa Saturday 31.08.2019
Well after a brilliant win in the week we now move back to the Premier league, Brighton in the next round will be tough but we are a different proposition now, IMO the win against a so called team of minnows was very welcome we have made a habit the last few years in going out to these teams, long may the winning ways continue. On Saturday we have a small matter of a Palace team who have had a great win at Man U so they will be up for it, we will also be up against CB for I think the first time since he left, and Ayew who promised so much but couldn't wait to get away when the going got tough, time to show them the error of their ways methinks. It will be tough but with the team we have anything is possible IMO I'm going for a 2-1 win for us, I think Wesley will want another taste of a goal and SJM with the other. UTV

Hope Trezeguet deserved the red card.
After the referee against Bournemouth refused to send off Bolling for very obvious second yellow fouls I'm concerned about the state of the officiation even with VAR. Presumably VAR was used to confirm both the cards.
Anyway we are in trouble now. With us pressed back, they can bring on Andros Townsend to pepper in shots from distance and Benteke for the corner kicks.

I can understand why Dean Smith would sub on Hourihane for Luiz as he is on a yellow but it does make us defensively weaker at the back. He's on good scoring form though so if we do get forward he might bag us 3 points from a pot shot.
Just as I write this Ayew scores. Game over.

Absolute sham, we didn't help ourselves but the fucking officiating in this game was DIABOLICAL. Not just the Grealish incident at the end but for the entire 96 fucking minutes.
Trez should've known better for being on a yellow, to be fair so can't really argue that one much but how Kouyate didn't get the same treatment for cumulative offenses I don't know and it summed it up at the end when Townsend took out Guilbert from behind and was rewarded with a Palace throw-in to which he gave a big smug thumbs up and applause to the linesman.
That aside, crap game for both us and them.

So we had a goal 5 minutes into additional time disallowed and instead a booking for Grealish for something in the build up.
Non-Villa fans on Twitter saying we were robbed.
This game smells but I really cannot comment until I watch the replays. After all we do have VAR now. Everything could be spot on.

Don't think we robbed per se, the whistle had blown before Lansbury scored. But there did appear to be contact and shouldn't have been given against as a dive.

Not good for us, need to start finding wins from somewhere. Annoying that there's an internatinal break now, so we don't play for another two weeks, would have been nice to have had another game this week, to put this one behind us.

Todays ref has form with us in the past, but VAR is apparently saying there wasn't enough to disagree with the ref, people will make their own judgement.

Was VAR used for this? I guess not. The referee blew up and stopped the dangerous play on the basis of a dive and it wasn't checked.

I can't believe we were booked 4 times in the first half. I didn't think we had a dirty team.

VAR would have been used to review the "dive" I believe, not over-turn the disallowed goal as the ref blew up to stop play before the goal went in and I read the VAR check agreed with the ref's decision - or rather, did not consider it a "clear and obvious" error by the ref.

I agree, we don't. On another weekend with another ref, it goes differently.
As I said earlier though, the game was crap despite the officiating and neither team covered themselves in glory. Unfortunately Davis just can't prove himself good enough at Premier League level and Wesley struggled to make any impact at all today, total opposite of his performance vs. Everton, but Mings and Engels weren't superb either.

Grealish had made the pass. How was he supposed to get out of the way of Cahill? He was going to fall down one way or another or else he would have possibly barged into him, committing a foul.
I don't like having to rely on another game and another referee for things to go differently. That's not football. This is bullshit.
2 games out of 4. Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. No wonder the little team are all rising to the top of the English leagues.
Edit: seen the replay of the second yellow. That was the correct decision. Referee had no option there. His first was a bit soft but you've seen them given. As for the disallowed goal, Jermaine Jenas is probably the best football pundit right now. Totally agree it's the worst decision you could ever see. Not a dive, a good goal was disallowed for no reason. Villa should at least get the yellow expunged from Grealish's record so that doesn't cost us in future as well.

They are not using the VAR properly, it should be used like they do at Rugby games, VAR should be there to catch out the mistakes, and be used correctly it's a big let down, hope we can come back from this game,we have two weeks to get more players fit and up to speed.

Re: Match thread: Crystal Palace v Villa Saturday 31.08.2019
having been a referee for 25 years I quickly learnt to delay my whistle to see if any advantage occurred, better to be accused of playing the call rather than deprive a good advantage, its common sense really, what are todays refs taught ?

Re: Match thread: Crystal Palace v Villa Saturday 31.08.2019
Having watched this several times now i feel the correct action should have been for the ref to have let the play continue (as they do with offsides) then let VAR review the goal for any infringement. Although he claims he had a clear view i don't buy thay as there seemed to be at least three palace players between him and grealish.
End of the day worst case scenario should have been that he pulled the play back for the first offence, a push on grealish by zaha. So we where penalized twice, once for Jack trying to stay on his feet and then for him going down after the second tackle. So after this weekends games VAR pointless as it isn't being used correctly.
