Re: Quick Quiz
This is a fun thread!
Okay - here's a question - Aston Villa were league champions in 1890, finishing above Preston and Stoke.
True or false?

Re: Quick Quiz
Sort of but not really. I mean it's nothing to do with the way I've written it but there's one specific part of my statement that you need to think a bit more laterally about. I'll give you a clue: It's the word "league".

George Ramsey's 6 FA cups for Villa as manager stood as a record until when?

No that's right. Miserable wanker equalled his 95 year record this year against us.
Just to make it more depressing.

No but it's likely that a fair few Villa first teamers from the 1889-1890 season were in the league winning team that I'm talking about.......

Re: Quick Quiz
Well as nobody has got the answer - here it is:
Aston Villa won the inaugural National Baseball League, becoming National Champions in 1890, finishing above Preston and Stoke - see below the top three finishers from the division:
Although they had Birmingham across the top of their shirts, you can clearly see the AV below it.
Baseball was being promoted by the Spalding company, and followed a surge in interest in the sport that happened after a few years of US Pro baseball teams touring the UK - it was seen as an alternative pastime to cricket for footballers during the off season and maintained the team cohesion through the summer months.
As someone who played baseball for ten years, I never knew the history until recently, and so was thrilled to think Villa were the first National champions.
Interesting book (for those that like this sort of thing) available from the AVFC bookshop called "What About the Villa? Forgotten figures from Britain's first Pro Baseball League in 1890"

See - we were the best at everything in those days!!

yes we do!
Heres an easy one, " Newtown Row has a connection with AVFC for several resons, name two or the three (only smart arses need apply.)" reason why the club is connected.

Re: Quick Quiz
Got to be honest FP - I don't think this one is easy for 2 or 3 connections!
Obviously the easy part is the main connection which is that Shillcock's boot shop was on this road where the FA cup was stolen from. As for any more, I'm not sure. I do know that there was a barber's shop - might still be there whose roof was built from oak beams taken from the old Villa Training Ground (tenuous link at best) and that Ken Loach's Cathy Come Home was filmed around Newtown Row (can't see a Villa connection there), but that's all I can see.....

First National Baseball Champions. It's a shame Engalnd doesn't have the same bullshit overinflated egos of the Americans sometimes.
World Series Champions would sound much better. :)

You're correct with the FA cup part. The other 2 connections are all to do with William Shillcock and the shop.

OK! you've had 5 whole days to find the answer, William Shillcock was the inventor of the McGregor Football ball and Football boots, naming it the McGregor after the founder of the first football League.
