Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
I'm seeing many suggesting that if we sign Terry, then it means we're going to be playing five at the back; I really hope not as we don't have the players to suit such a system, three central defenders, with Jedinak and possibly Whelan in central midfield, relying on Hutton/Bree and Taylor for width, is just way too defensive; it would also exclude our more creative players like Grealish, Adomah and Green.

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
I'd be quite happy to have Terry, it would give us 3 good centre backs, so if one gets injured we wouldn't have to depend on Elphick. So to me it would strengthen that area perfectly and his experience and leadership would really help the players around him and the youngsters at the club.
His name would also help us to attract other players.
Whilst not a fan of Terry as a person, you can't knock his ability on the pitch and his professionalism is good. And lets face it he won't be coming up against players like Kane, Aguero, Sanchez etc. week in week out, so he would be fine for a year or so in the championship.

I Agree Wriggle, the threat he would pose from set pieces would be a huge bonus too. I envisage going into the last 20 mins needing a winner and on comes Terry as we launch an assault on the oppositions box! It's almost inevitable he'd convert a few 1 points into 3 surely? If he can do it against Premier League defenders he'll surely have some joy against Championship ones?!
Might get a few Red card mind lol!

Once again though its ironic that a player who has not covered himself in glory last season still thinks he is good enough for a euro league team, the mind boggles with these players nowadays.
I've got some experience with horrific injuries and I'm not sure it's a case of the injury holding him back from his original form. While I agree he looked good the first 5-6 matches, arguably even a class above anything else we have, I think his biggest flaw is the fact that he can't defend. He is very decent going forward, but positionally and strength wise he is like a teenager. It might be that he looked better in the PL because it's more about pace than the championship, but I don't know. I just know I prefer my defenders to defend as a number one priority.
In regards to injuries, what's normally worst to come back from is 1) recurring injuries 2) mental barriers 3) agility (if that's the right word). Amavi doesn't lack any of this from what I can see, he just gets caught out because he can't defend.

Agree. I was a little surprised we didn't see him further up the pitch more.

The other advantage is that we would benefit from "The John Terry Rule" where, if you are John Terry, and you enter your own penalty area you are allowed to act as a second goalkeeper.
Oh shit I forgot, The John Terry Rule has a sub-clause which states that this rule only applies if the opponents are Aston Villa.

Just looking at Xia's cryptic tweet again and i'd guess that the love heart and the back soon, would suggest someone is away either getting married or honeymooning and it's pinned on that they will sign when they return.
Only person i know who has just got married is Jack Wilshere. I don't think Terry's holiday is anything romantic??
anyway just a thought...

It seems Gil may be close to exiting, Betis being the rumoured destination. Hopefully we'll trouser in the region of €4-5m. A couple of Jordons to move on now and things should start looking better, if Richards and Elphick also found new homes that would be just creamy.

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
'the sun' are reporting that we're set to sign Elmohamady. I know we haven't signed any of them yet, but I've not been impressed with many of the players we've been linked with this summer, I mean Terry, Samba, Whelan, Ledley, Elmohamady, Boyd; if Bruce signs too many of these types, he'll leave the club in a mess, like he did with Sunderland, or how O'Neill did when he left us.
Xia's a well meaning owner, but feels like the people in charge of the footballing side of things, have us stuck in the dark ages, and that could cost us.

According to the sun, Terry is on the verge of agreeing a £60,000 per week deal to play for us next season. They also claim he's turned down Swansea, Bournemouth and a mega money deal to play in China.

avfctransfers1 is saying the same thing - "very close but nothing certain" - but that's all he's saying. So, based on his record in the last couple of windows, it could still go awry but it sounds like there is every chance it is a goer.
I'd be more than happy with that. I have no particular antipathy towards him any longer - I'm over him nearly breaking Milner's leg and for being a full kit wanker. Anyone anti his signing might want to ask themselves the question "Do you know who we are? We are the mighty Aston Villa" but ask it from another perspective to get the answer. The answer is, unfortunately, a mid-table Championship club, currently light years away from the level he was operating at last year.
The idea that we should take some kind of moral stance "'cos, he's like, a fucking racist, inee? (which he vehemently denies) or "He shagged a teammates missus" (which I'm sure there is no denial but big deal. Is he the first guy to fuck a workmates missus?) and not sign him is bizarre.
Personally, I think Grealish is 10x the twat Terry is and Gabby would fuck a slow puncture, let alone a teammates wife but anytime they do the business all is forgotten. We need to go up this year and Terry can help on and off the pitch. Sign him up.

Not a fan of JT but he is a winner on the pitch so hopefully if he joins he can bring that to a side with confidence issues?

Hope so too but not sure it's worked before (Schmeichel, Pires, Keane). Probably harder to integrate these "big personalities" into the team. Maybe it'll help attract players to a club that from a casual observers POV is still - after many years - looking like a paper tiger.

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
If we do sign Terry, I think one area we'll benefit hugely from is his ability to play it from the back. In theory his signing should mean less 'hoof ball', just so long as he has confidence in the players ahead of him.
I think the main reason he's being offered a deal though is his presence in the dressing room, I wouldn't even be too surprised if he's coming in as a player-coach.

Terry's experience will be valuable for us in going for promotion he's a winner and he can pass that on to our players.

I just can't see Terry working out for us. Think it will be a huge mistake, just like Lescott and Richards.
But we'll see. I'll gladly eat pie for the entire season if it shows to be a masterstroke.

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
None of the links I'm seeing are giving me any hope whatoseover about next season; defensive after defensive player. I keep seeing suggestions that Bruce is going to go 532, that will be a disaster, and a waste of players like Adomah, Green and Grealish, also none of our full-backs with the exception of Amavi, suit the wing-back role.
Not sure of the fixation of finding a Jedinak clone for when he's out either; the reason we're so reliant on him, is because we're so negative and defensive, so the midfield needs a player of his type to help soak up the pressure; what we should be doing is concentrating on becoming more of an attacking force, so there's less need for Jedinak or someone like him.

Cannot see the tweet, but looks like 'avfctransfers1' has said that Terry won't be announced on Saturday with the kit, despite 'the mirror' reporting that he will.
I'm bored of whole Terry saga now.
