Re: Gordon Cowans
I would say this might be another big move from Steve Round? Remember he's in-charge of our "football department" which means he's responsible for improving the whole structure from top to bottom. And with him having vast experience of being a youth team coach, reserve team coach and also working at senior level he's gonna have his own ideas of how things should be done. Though our academy has been hyped up at times personally I don't think it's been as productive as it could have been and changing aspects of our youth system would certainly be welcomed by me.
The other day I was watching old Villa games from ten years ago and seeing how good Luke Moore was. Still to this day he's one of the youngest players to score a hattrick in the premiership and yet look what happened to him? Kids like that should have been what Harry Kane is today. So I'm happy that Round is making these big decisions.

Unconfirmed reports from within the club are that this comes as no surprise from what we here and see. Now read into that what you want but it would be best fair to say that Sid was not 100% happy in his day to day activities. No more known at moment.Joppe84 wrote:Anyone know why he left his position at the club?
Edit......Retirement is the official stance coming through.

Re: Gordon Cowans
Sid has been here through some rubbish times recently and has stepped up when needed and had to work under some awful managers and owner. However I think through all this he is one of the few who has always had Villa and the fans at heart.
Always a shame when a true great and real legend leaves the club but good luck for the future Sid and I hope everything goes well for him!

I love Sid. Met him a couple of times and you can tell he really does give a shit about this club.
If him leaving is the best for both parties then so be it. Good luck to him.

Sid will always be remembered by all Villans as a legend, times change, football moves on quickly thesedays but i am intrigued as to who we will be appointing to manage our youth team,
Thriller i always felt the same about Moore, i recall him hurting his shoulder and was out for ages until the January i think and he was never the same as before the injury i felt, but being played out wide was a bad call aswell imo he was a striker.

Doesn't he still have his own private football training company for kids away from the club too?

I don't care what.has or hasn't gone.on behind the scenes AVFC should definitely announce it as a retirement and Sid should be out on that pitch before kick off so the villa fans can give him the send off he deserves. Nothing else will do - the club owes him that.

Re: Gordon Cowans
David Platt once said, that his ambition when at Villa was to make a run that Sid Cowans didn't spot. He went on to say that he never managed it.
The best midfielder I've ever seen in a Villa shirt and in my life time I've been lucky enough to see some great ones. I fact best midfielder in any shirt. Good luck Sid and thanks for the memories.

Absolute legend. Would love to see the club have him on the pitch for a proper farewell if that's what he wants. Or a testimonial game.

Re: Gordon Cowans
I wish him a happy retirement but he will always live on with us telling our kids what a player he was, i caught the tail end of his career being a young en in the 80's but he could pick a pass, we could do with a player like him now.

Good luck to him, must admit when I first saw a headline on Facebook I feared he had snuffed it before taking in the detail!

Re: Gordon Cowans
He scored the first goal I saw at Villa Park. 1979 against Tottenham.
I was in trinity and it was a free kick. from where I was, I saw the ball curl past the wall into the net.
I was six.
from that moment on - I knew I was claret and blue thru and thru'
Not sure if Villa have a hall of fame but he should be first choice. No other word than legend.

Re: Gordon Cowans
I think we all agree that it's a shame to see such a legend leave the club. He was my hero when I first started watching the Villa and when we played football in the playground at school there was only 2 players I would ever be, Sid or Zico. They were both in my eyes the ultimate footballers of that era.
One thing that has dawned on me though is that we call McGrath 'McGrath ', what do we call Sid? Because his achievements surely surpass Gods, and for me he is the pinnacle of Villa legends.
