Derby vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Well, it's another week, and another tough game for the Villa. Today's injury news might be quite crucial to the outcome of this game tbh as Bruce has just confirmed that Samba, Hutton and Lansbury are out injured. This worries me because Bruce has already contrived to pick Jedinak as a centre-back and that's something I'm yet to be convinced about. It will either be him or Elphick partnering Chester tomorrow with Elmo coming in at right-back which is probably a positive thing as he's provided the two crosses from which Davis has scored from.
For Derby their dangerous winger, Tom Lawrence, is out for them so that's a big bonus for us. Other than that they don't seem to have any other injury concerns.
Of course, this is a massive game where our promotion ambitions are concerned. The injury to Samba leaves me less hopeful, but Derby do have a habit of laying an egg every few games like they did against Ipswich the other day so anything can happen. This would be my team...
................Johnstone...............
..Elmo...Elphick...Chester...Taylor...
............Whelan..Hourihane.....
..................Onomah.....
.....Snodgrass............Adomah.....
...................Davis.......................
I know folks don't like Elphick, but I just think his experience would bring much more stability to the backline than shoehorning someone in there just because you "think" he can handle it. I'd also keep the front six as it's been for our previous wins and see what they can do. Elmo coming back should give us even more going forward and can only benefit young Davis imo.

I see a lot of people talking up Derby and in doing so dismissing our chances, but they're a very similar team to us in the way that they play, and both teams are virtually identical points wise, so I don't think we should be scared, or approach the game with the mentality that a draw would be a positive result, we're getting to the stage now where we really need to beat the division's better sides, to keep the season's goals alive.

The problem is that Bruce will view it as exactly that!
Can't see anything but a bore draw, also can't see Bruce changing the front six either, so it is a toss up between Elphick and Jedinak.

I quite fancy something like this:
Johnstone
Hutton - Elphick - Chester - Taylor
Hourihane - Onomah
Snodgrass - Grealish - Adomah
Davis
Stick Whelan on the bench until we need someone to look angry. Grealish is an attacking midfielder, let him go where he wants. Onomah is a defensive midfielder and will allow Hourihane more freedom.

Bruce blamed himself after the Millwall game for changing a winning side and said that Hourihane would be back in this week for Lansbury, so unless he's had a change of heart in the meantime, it's definitely going to be the midfield five with Davis upfront that we've become used to in recent times.

Sorry I wasn't very clear as I was agreeing with @AstonThriller team selection as Landsbury is injured anyway.

Yeah I'd love to see that team start and if Grealish gets tired I'd like to see O'Hare replace him. Having said that, I'd like a Jag for Xmas and that ain't gonna happen either.....

Just seen that Hutton is doubtful so maybe it will be Elmo at RB.

Re: Derby vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Realised that a lot of Villa fans would be pleased with a point, amazing how low we have sunk when we are happy with a point at Derby (myself included). If those are the aspirations what chance have we got if/when we get into the PL?

Presumably Adomah's going to play as the striker, interesting line-up really, we can't really play long-ball with that team.

Re: Derby vs Aston Villa Match Thread
To be fair Adomah plays that role quite well, but we won't win anything in the air so hopefully we may play a little bit more football?
Good to see Grealish back, just prove you are worth a starting place!

Re: Derby vs Aston Villa Match Thread
1st thought was that it's a poor line up
But on reflection that looks like a team that can play football - Hourihan, Onomah, Grealish and Snoddy all like the ball at their feet and Bertie has the pace to get in behind.
Shame about Hutton as Elmo is only good for crosses and we have no one to put their head on them today.

Re: Derby vs Aston Villa Match Thread
I feared Bruce would do this today which Is why I haven't been confident about getting a result at all. The Jedinak experiment, when we desperately need the points, just stinks of naivety to me. This was a man who said last season that he "felt sorry for Elphick" because of how professional he is and how hard he trains. And the moment he has a chance to pick a guy who has been in a defense that has got promoted, he picks a defensive midfielder instead.
Then he plays Elmo but rests the guy who has benefitted from his crosses the most (Davis), and just leaves us with no aerial threat whatsoever. SMH I just sick of this sh/t man. Hopefully, I'll be proven wrong, but I'd be surprised to see us keep a clean sheet or score more than one today tbh.

Re: Derby vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Playing without a striker is okay if you're a brilliant footballing side, that create chance after chance, but not sure we can make it work, to have any chance today, we're going to at least have to attempt to play football, and our movement is going to have to be excellent.
Such an important game, win and it should do wonder for our confidence, and we can use it as a springboard for the rest of the season, it would also stop Derby in their tracks. Lose and things will look pretty bleak.

Word is the defense looks terrible and Derby could be two up already. Oh and Onomah is playing upfront apparently!!!, not Adomah LOL you couldn't make it up .

Re: Derby vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Why on earth would Bruce play Onomah up front? He's basically admitting that he doesn't know what to with us unless we've got a big strong player playing up top, and what must it do for Hogan's confidence.

Surprise surprise, once again we're showing that under Bruce's instruction, we can't beat a decent team, it's really quite simple if we're have any chance of promotion he has to be replaced, it's incompetence of a staggering magnitude that it hasn't happened already.
Game over, and season over unless the club wakes up.

Just amazed over how bad our football is. We can't pass and move offensively. Everything we manage to do is HOOOOOOOF.
Fucking pathetic football. How Bruce isn't sacked is absolutely nuts.

That's it for me. No chance I'm wasting another 45 minutes today on Bruce's "football". What a pile of fucking dog shit.
Only positive here is Grealish who looks pretty good, but jesus christ our football is so fucking bad.
