Foxy...part of the problem you have can be fixed in your profile (it's on the menu just below the site's header image). Go into that and you'll see a number of tabs. Go into the PREFERNCES tab.

Scroll down through those and you'll see "Display a notification when new replies are written". Set that to NO. It's a horrible feature, in my opinion.
