Mathieu Berson
The man David O'Leary spent 3 months chasing to sign, before Doug finally caved in and agreed to pay their extortionate £2.3million transfer fee
bizarre deal this, after finally securing him DOL then set about destroying him by stating that we hadn't brought a world beater and needed time to settle, remember him making his debut against qpr at home in the league cup, nearly scored to, then disappeared for another 2 months, last memory was him coming on at half time against arsenal in 2005, 3-0, he angled a peach of a left foot pass across the park for Angel to score

Re: Mathieu Berson
That's a bit of a mystery, according to wiki.
After leaving Villa he had two years at Levante in Spain, then two years at Toulouse. He then went a while without a club before being picked up by Vannes (who...?) in summer 2011. It appears he had made only three appearances for them since and no-one seems to know where he is now.

My, we have had some obscure players over the years! So many have had a surname beginning with B: Berson, Balaban, Boulding, Beinlich Bartlet, Bakke,

Should we have a thread on obscure Villa players that have played for the first team? Najwan Ghrayib must be worth a shout!

Najwan Ghrayib ended up being John Gregory's assistant when he was managing in Israel.

Very odd given that he had a right kick at Gregory when he was leaving villa. Found an article earlier in which he said 'Alan Wright wouldn't even get a game in the Israeli League yet Gregory plays him every week'!

Re: Mathieu Berson
The French club (Vannes) hit financial difficulties in Berson’s second season however, and in June 2010 they released him due to budget cuts. Berson struggled to find a new club and was out of the game for a season until he was picked up by Breton club Vannes OC in 2011.
Berson is now captain of Vannes, playing in defence for the third tier club. He led them to a fourth place finish in his first season, narrowly missing out on promotion to Ligue 2.
(Correct as of 2012)

Spent a couple of hours talking to him and his very lovely wife whilst on holiday in the Algarve in 2003. Had no idea who he was for the first hour until he mentioned my Villa tattoo!
