Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
It would be good to see some outs and deadwood clearing?

Think this will happen on the last day of the transfer window when Villa get desperate to offload and equally clubs get desperate to get players in!

For McCognac, Elpthick and Gardner all I can see are some last minute loans with us still paying at least half their wages and therefore helping to fund our rivals promotion push! Brilliant business there!

The 'brilliant business' isn't now or whenever they are moved on with their wages sponsored, it was when we signed or awarded (Gardner) new contracts that were never realistic. Add Richards to that group and you you have some of the most 'brilliant business' in a long while.

Xia's posted another one of his 'cryptic' emoji clue things...
https://twitter.com/Dr_TonyXia/status/902600854724681728
Which I think basically means that squad is full so we won't be signing anymore players, but expect to see some departures 'soon'.

To be honest did we expect anything else? I think we have signed at least 1 if not 2 more than the good Dr wanted, so there is only direction of travel left.

Don't expect anymore but wouldn't be disappointed with some cover at left-back, or another central defender if Elphick leaves. To be honest if it wasn't for Davis's recent form I think we might have still gone for another striker on loan, Bruce himself was hinting as such until recently.

Speaking of strikers, just seen that Alan Nixon is saying that we still want Crouch but need to sell some players first. I doubt it's true, because hasn't got a single thing right this summer, but at the same time I wouldn't put it past Bruce to try and sign someone like Crouch.

Hopefully Davis can fill the void until Kodjia gets himself fit, probably by the end of September?

Why just fill the void? OK, Davis is going to need careful handling, but he can be more than a fill in IF he can maintain his existing form and even build on it.

I'm just putting it out there, but while Kodjia is the better player Kienan has made us look like a better team. We haven't had a striker bringing our midfield into play since Carew IMO. Maybe we could play both?

We mustn't get carried away with Davis as he is still very young but an exceptional prospect, there is no way he can be expected to play every game or even every other game, he will need a rest soon, probably when Kodjia gets back!

Birmingham Mail saying that Bruce wants one more signing, but we need to sell a few first.

Really? Thought Tony said that's it. Or is the mail simply trying to get more clicks over the next 36 hours?

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
Xia hasn't really said that's it, just that the squad is full (or that's what it seems like he's saying), if we were to sell some players then obviously the squad would become less full and maybe leave room for another signing.
Almost all Birmingham Mail articles are click bait, to be honest I think Gregg Evans is basically just basing it on Alan Nixon saying that we still want Crouch, I doubt he actually knows whether we want another player or not, he's just guessing.

Christ if we signed Crouch I think that would finish me. It would signal that SB was committed to hoofball. Probably got a chubby on when he read that Crouch has scored more headers than any other Prem player.

It might make us the oldest squad in the championship!

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
To be fair to Crouch, throughout his career he's been a decent striker on the ground as well, but no doubt if Bruce were to sign him, it would be with his height in mind. I can't see us signing him anyway, I think he's still getting games at Stoke, he scored for them the other day.

Apparently Stephen Kelly is training with us... a 34 year old right-back.

Fresh from helping Rotherham into relegation. We needed cover at RB now Bacuna has gone, makes perfect sense. RIght side of 30 too.

Lots of talk of McCormack going to Sunderland tomorrow, Gardner being linked with Burton, as a replacement for Irvine who's gone to Hull. All quiet on Elphick, but I don't think it would be the end of the world if he was to stay.

Agree with Elphick perhaps staying, as I can't believe he really is as bad as he has been for the Villa!

Loaning players to potential rivals does not make me happy, are we that desperate to get rid?

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
How on earth have Sunderland got into a position where despite selling Pickford for £30m and getting parachute payments they still can't afford to pay the £1m or so that it would take to buy Elphick. If he's only going on loan we'd probably be better off keeping him as back-up, seeing as though we've only got three senior centre backs and two of those are well into their thirties.
