Im not bothered about this match it is a fuck*ing friendly! We lost to luton last pre season and then beat Arsenal! If lambert deserves the sack it is based on the last 2 seasons and not this 1 match! Guess there are some postives Nzogbia scoring

In and out. Get the job done. Thank you very much.

That was what Paul Lambert wanted from his Villa side in Holland. What he got was very different.

Villa were sluggish, laboured and lacklustre. Defensively they were awful and going forward they weren’t much better.

It’s hard to find any positives at all from the performance.

The only saviour was that this was a pre-season friendly and not a Premier League clash with the eyes of the world watching on.

Charles N’Zogbia’s free-kick probably deserves a mention but this was just not Villa’s day.

Groningen raced into a two-goal lead thanks to a brace from Tjaronn Chery.

Groningen v Aston Villa: The fans and the football

Jarchinio Antonia added a third and after N’Zogbia restored some pride, Dino Islamovic slammed in a fourth at the death.

Villa have got a lot of work to do with the big kick-off less than a fortnight away.

Lambert wanted minimum fuss after the taxing but productive tour of the United States, but his team made it a day to forget.

On Wednesday against Chesterfield they were excused. That game should never have happened.

But here in Holland they were poor and you can’t dress it up in any other way.

Ron Vlaar sat on the Villa bench but was not among the substitutes. They needed him.

Philippe Senderos and Nathan Baker started as the centre-halves with Ciaran Clark at left-back and Alan Hutton on the right.

Lambert experimented with Kieran Richardson in a role behind Darren Bent but neither had an impact.

With four minutes on the clock Villa fell behind.

A bad clearance from Shay Given allowed Chery to tuck away his first of the day.

The Irishman slammed his fists into the ground with frustration but there was nothing he could do to stop the second.

As Chery collected the ball 30 yards from goal he let rip and his strike sailed into the top corner.

The hosts were streets ahead of Villa who looked slow and laboured.

The one chance for the visitors in the first half fell to Bent on 24 minutes.

Andi Weimann set Richardson free down the right and he crossed for the lone striker but his shot was blocked.

Goalkeeper, Shay Given of Aston Villa
That was as good as Villa gave before the changes in the second half.

After Given denied Yoell van Nieff, the home side added a third on 32 minutes and it was fully deserved.

Danny Hoesen was played in down the left and he got the better of makeshift full-back Clark.

Antonia timed his run perfectly and had the easiest of tap-ins to convert Hoesen’s cross.

Much of the game saw Villa camped in their own half.

On 60 minutes Baker made a great last-ditch challenge to prevent Hoesen from shooting inside the box and making it four.

That was important. Any more goals against at that stage of the game and it would have been a real embarrassment.

Lambert wanted to give as many minutes as he could to those who started the game. However, with so many under-performing he made his first batch of changes on 69 minutes.

Danny Hoesen of Groningen and Fabian Delph of Aston Villa battle for the ball
N’Zogbia’s arrival was the only highlight.

Granted, Jores Okore tightened up the defence, but the breaches had already occurred.

On 76 minutes N’Zogbia curled in a fine free-kick from 22 yards out.

Leandro Bacuna, who made an emotional return to his boyhood club, looked destined to take the set-piece but N’Zogbia stepped up and showed his class.

Unfortunately the Frenchman was dispossessed in the final minute of play allowing the hosts to break free. Chery played in Antonia who crossed to the back post and substitute Islamovic made it four.

A day to forget.

VILLA (4-2-3-1): Given, Hutton, Senderos (Okore 69), Baker (Herd 73), Clark (Stevens 73), Westwood, (Gardner 73), Delph (El Ahmadi 69), Weimann (Bacuna 69), Richardson, Agbonlahor (Grealish 73), Bent (N’Zogbia 69).

I don't think many people if any want him sacked because of todays game, today just showed to mr at least, that he is planning on playing the same system and formation that has failed to achieve consistent results. Its all well and good beating arsenal away, but if your losing to fulham/palace/west ham at home, its makes the good results a bit hollow really

If anyone thinks Lambert needs the sack just because of this 1 game are on the fucking wind up, he needs the sack because the same shit tactics are going to be used and we will be relegated, Joe Brittle will spend his time on the operation table. 1 fucking game, try 3 seasons!

We all knew a combination of Baker and Clarke in a back four wouldn't work and again proved today.
We all knew Bent playing as a lone striker wouldn't work and again proved today.
We all knew 433 wouldn't work and it was again proved today.

Hopefully Mr Keane is going to tell Lambert what we all know and suggest a few changes but I won't be too worried until he tries the same tactics in the league.
Whether it's a 532 or a 442 we don't stand a chance without a partner for Bent up top

You fail to acknowledge that I said it's not just this game, 1st pre-season game I thought we've actually changed tactics, by the 3rd game it was obvious that Lambert hadn't learnt his lesson. Call me what the fuck you like, call me a worse fan than you or the rest but I don't give a shit, I see things having not changed apart from different faces and the same shit.

I wouldn't call you anything, worse fan or whatever, but I've seen terrible pre season results going back to the early sixties and it has had no reflection on the seasons results.

Things are bad, there is no getting away from it, but pre season results are no barometer of what is to come.

Sorry for the swearing bud, I hope you're right, I hope that the team looking as knackered as they did and crap they done was a master tactic by Lambert but I just don't see it, Parma will rip us a knew one, if they don't then the tactics would be right unless he plays 4-6-0.

Look at it another way, we ripped Valencia apart last pre season, then look how badly the season panned out.

Do not get me wrong, the club is in a very bad place at the moment, but it is too early to make judgements on meaningless frendlies.

I and one or two others have only been saying that over the last two seasons and thankfully by the penultimate games of those seasons we've been wrong.

Maybe you were one of those who thought that we would be challenging for Europe under Lambert and if so we've both been wrong.

Friendlies are meaningless in terms of results - United beat Madrid, Forrest beat Albion, Newcastle soundly beaten, Palace lost to Brentford and Olympiakos beat Man City on pens. All these results I'd expect to be reversed in a competitive match.

Villa's problem is we can't even seem to point to the fitness at the moment as half of them look heavily out of shape
