It does seem odd and there has been a couple of rumours doing the rounds (him taking off with some lass after warm weather training being the most frequent one) about what has happened.

True, true,     but you'd imagine he'd be able to combine both dreams, especially on a footballer's salary! Or to think logically, ask his agent to find him a club in Portugal or Spain. Giving up seems a bit drastic and leads me to believe there must be something more to the whole episode

I haven't got any proof either, and I heard it was Ket and drink which was Herd's downfall, but I did hear the same rumour that he had a problem with a substance of some description

yep if you fail a drug test. so perhaps the 'personal reasons' for non-selection for the last few months were cover for a ban. he had a contract til 2015 at Villa, but that would be grounds for termination too.

edit: whatever the reasons, it is a shame if he is quitting football. don't think he was Premier League standard, but could have followed Lichaj and gone to a decent Championship club.
