Match Thread Brentford v Villa 13.02.2019
Well this is a match we have never done well in, in fact even though we have started the matches with purpose we have been comprehensibly beaten, now we have their manager will this give us an edge? I'm hoping so and I'm going for a 1-2 to us in a tense game UTV

Please play well, and win for once. Surely we're due some good form and results. Need a good performance from our defence, and for our attacking players to give Abraham more support, so we're not completely reliant on him. Will be doubly hard as Brentford will be extra up for it, with it being against Smith, and them being on a good run at the moment.
Not confident at all, in fact I don't think I'd be confident against any team in the division at the moment, given our recent form. Just have to hope that tomorrow is when we turn things around.

Midfield is the key. Any defence will look stretched if it has a missing midfield such as ours versus Sheffield Utd in front of it. Jedinak definitely can’t start this game, we have to go with Whelan from the off as he earned a start after his showing against Sheffield Utd. I hope for a better showing from Hourihane in midfield, and ElGhazi on the right. I fancy us to put in a performance following our great escape and I’ll go 0-2 Villa.

Whelan has 20 minutes in him, which is why he looked good in the last match. He doesn't have the legs to last a whole match. I think Bjarnasson is the only option but I can't see how we can play two in front of the defence and leave McGinn up on his own, stick Bharnasson there and have Hourihane further forward again.

Apart from Saturday, Brentford are bang on form, we are in no form at all, Dean Smith returns to his old club, they’ll be bang up for it
2-0 Brentford

With all the bad decisions going against us, we need our luck to change and our team to put in a good winning run, also hope the old boys start to put in a performance tonight, 2-1 win.

We need 10 or 11 wins from our remaining 15 games for play offs, there are no signs of us achieving this & tonight against a team we haven’t beaten since relegation doesn’t fill me with any confidence whatsoever
We can hope though. UTV

I agree with the numbers that you mention, I’ve written this previously. What’s very important is to beat the teams above us. We have to win tonight, realistically, but it’s imperative that we beat WBA, Boro, Leeds, Derby, Norwich, Bristol City, Birmingham. Out of that lot you could argue that losses to Leeds and Norwich mightn’t be as damaging as losses to the others. But we really need to beat the others AND add another 5 or 6 wins on top. Hope is all we have left, it’s well out of our hands. We are reliant on others falling away, which I’m not actually seeing any signs of.

Poor again, it's got to the stage now where it's not even a surprise, even after the comeback against Sheffield United it was all too predictable that that wouldn't lift the performances levels for this game... It's also worth bearing in mind, that despite all the praise they get for their system, Brentford are actually eighteenth in the league Running out of things to say, we just constantly disappoint... Even if we were to steal a win today, I'd have no confidence that it would be the start of a decent run of form.

With an hour gone I’d have to agree with all the above. If we steal a win though that’s all that matters. Hoping for some sort of period in the game where we are better.

Whatever the result of this match, after 60 minutes of watching, you have to say that Aston Villa are currently a big Championship Club with excellent supporters and (very) average team. We are not going to the play off's because a number of teams are better that us and we don't deserve to.
We are weak all over the pitch and basic skills seem to be totally missing.

Gotten what we deserved. Nothing. We’re poor all over the pitch. Not a single period of the game did we look capable of winning. Oh well. I’m buckling down for next season in the championship. We’re miles away in reality.

Nothing to add, you've all covered it.
Saying that the defence is looking better, we just don't have an attack to give them any relief.

Two wins in thirteen, performances just as bad as they were under Bruce, poor in game management, unable to come up with a system that works without Grealish, only one win in eight at Villa Park... Sorry but our squad isn't that bad, and Smith should be doing better... As far as I'm concerned he needs to prove he's the right man for the job between now and the end of the season, not expectin miracles, but he needs to show something... It's going to be a very big summer for us, we need to absolutely sure we've got the right man in charge, no good backing someone blindly.

Disappointed but not entirely surprised based on recent form.
The positive news(!) is a win at the weekend will put us back to 8th. Blues don't play this weekend and Forest are away at Preston which could be tricky for them. Derby then have Millwall next week which is never a "given". But the start of things being positive relies on us getting a good result against the Baggies before even thinking about other results going our way. Yikes.

Second game in a row where we were totally outclassed in every part of the pitch! The only comfort I got was when the commentators mentioned that 10 of the players in the Brentford side had been signed under Smith and the 11th was Barbet who was already there when Smith joined?
We simply could not pass to one another last night and with the high press players like Hutton and Elphick either got tackled with the ball or hoofed it back to their defenders? Shocking!
We still managed to have the better chances during the match but unfortunately they fell to Adomah and Hourihane and not Tammy!

Re: Match Thread Brentford v Villa 13.02.2019
The most depressing thing was that Brentford's supposedly "inferior" players were able to take a first touch and bring the ball under instant control. Their pressing, passing and movement were excellent and they all won their individual battles.
We had absolutely none of that. If Brentford had been wearing claret and blue, I would have been proud to have called them "my team".
We are back to the Bruce days and I hope it's only temporary.

Just watched the highlights. Nothing to see for Villa fans, it's pretty much 10mins of Brentford looking crap but outplaying us. Jesus.
