Set pieces
Why are they so bad? Surely someone at the club must know how to strike a ball? Westwood pisses me off. I could do better, and I mean that.

Vertout was touted as shit hot at set pieces. Maybe once he's settled and up to speed we'll see him take over

Re: Set pieces
What about defending set pieces. Could not work out if it was zonal marking or just piss poor

Re: Set pieces
Teams can utilise both zonal AND man marking and it does tend to look highly confused but it can be highly effective. But players need to really attack the ball and Clark is very hot and cold with this, Bacuna is usually off with the fairies and our midfield aren't exactly massive beasts are they?
When the opposition get a corner, I naturally assume the worst and if the ball gets cleared then it's a bonus.
Oh, Guzan...forgot him. Man Utd had a free kick that got floated over to the back post where one of their players was as free as a bird but made a mess of his chance. Guzan went mad that he want picked up but its up to him to be ordering players about in that penalty box and ensuring that every man is covered. He failed on that front.

Re: Set pieces
Didn't we use to think Lambert wanted Westwood to float in corners/free kicks and is it possible it wasn't instructions, just how he hit them?

Re: Set pieces
I heard that Benteke liked them to be floated in. Can't understand that unless he felt that he'd win most headers against an onrushing defence.
But the floaty stuff will tend to hit the right areas more often than one that's belted in low and and hard so maybe that's Westwood's reasoning here?

Its all about the keeper, GUZAN OUT!
Its his box, control it, organise your soldiers and get that ball away!

Attacking set pieces are all about Rudy now, set him up and he will win most. I wanna see Veretout take em, build his own confidence at same time if he sets up a goal, we need him up to speed fast.

Re: Set pieces
It's not just down to Guzan to set the defenders up. Richards needs to take the lead and position his team mates as well. As captain he needs to lead them.
On a side note, it's good to see (albeit two games in) we seem to have people wanting to collect a ball from a throw in and some nifty ideas too. How many times do we counter only to then spend 20 seconds deciding where to throw tje god damn ball??

Re: Set pieces
its guzan's positional awareness and his lack of communication and sound instructions to his defenders just before they strike the ball, he can see all in front of him and Richards and co are reliant on what he says.
I agree that Richards is accountable too but he needs a stronger keeper to work with, just my opinion and I value yours too jay, its all work in progress.

The improvement on our throw ins is amazing. For years we've made this most basic aspect of the game look impossibly awkward.

Re: Set pieces
2 games in 1 set piece goal scored and none conceded. Can't even think of a direct save from a set piece.
