Just imagine a Paul McGrath that had good knees and wasn't on the booze...........
I've said it many times before, if he had been born elsewhere and played for say... Italy and AC Milan, or Germany and Bayern Munich... rather than Ireland and Aston Villa, then I think many would consider him the greatest defender of all-time.
Of course I am changing the course of history and things would have worked out differently, but let's not get bogged down in semantic science!
It's just how it is though. When Dwight Yorke played for us, I used to get laughed at - f'n LAUGHED AT! - for suggesting he could get in any team in the world. Then he goes to Man U and is lauded as a superstar. I also used to say Dwight Yorke wasn't just the best striker I'd seen for us, but that he was one of the best midfielders I'd seen too. Then he plays there for Trinidad and everyone acts like it's something amazing. Pfft.
Anyway, I am going off topic, so, um... Joey Guðjónsson? :)

Your suggestion for an XI has given me a few ideas I might pursue later in the week if I have the time.
Feel free to throw some ideas at me, I like little things like that, ha!

Stephen. Sadly, he has had injury issues his entire career. Even when we had to move him on, he had injury issues for years. Just unlucky really. I'm not saying he could have been amazing as I didn't see much of him, but it did look like there was a player in there. Great shame, some people have terrible luck with injuries.

I hear you bud, considering his poor younger years (personal wise) he should be very proud of what he has achieved given his limitations, a man that can truly stand proud and count himself as one of the worlds best defenders, but we know he doesn't as he is very very modest and when you bring up his career he gets embarrassed, he even gets shy when you sing his song to him lol

Kimbo, by the sounds of things, you should be working in the current villa backroom team!

I'd love and hate that job - basically the same as being a Villa fan really

I wonder if things might have been different (i.e, better) had his health not failed him.mickeywya wrote:Not a player, but Gerard Houllier, keep forgetting he managed us!

That day at West Ham. He turned and waved at us. I think he knew that he was gone. He made the odd faux pas but we needed to be more patient with him, in my view. It is harsh to criticise Houllier for what he did or didn't do. I would like to have seen him have another season if his health had been better.

Dave Norton (son off Ken Norton who played for Dog Heads) Never got to see him play at VP but we did play together for Redhill Comprehensive School back in 1978/79.

Dave Norton played for us in the masters when I went to watch it a few years ago. I had no idea who he was

Simon Stainrod i think played for us in the mid eighties

Ivo Stas has that great, "scored for us but never played for us" stat, which I love about him. When I ask people who it is, their first guess is usually David Unsworth

Re: I forgot he played for us...
I mostly remember him coming on and playing defensive mid for the last few minutes whenever we were defending a tight lead.
Brett Holman is someone I can easily see fitting into the 'forgot' category in a few years time.

I can see Kieran Richardson fitting into his category. He does when he's playing to be honest.
