The Quatar mess

Post by Guest on Mon Jun 02, 2014 1:58 pm

Gets messier: courtesy of sky

@Sky wrote:Issa Hayatou, head of the African Football Confederation (CAF) and vice-president of FIFA, has categorically denied allegations that he received gifts and money to support Qatar's bid for the 2022 World Cup.

The Sunday Times claimed it had obtained millions of documents which they say show Qatari former FIFA executive committee member Mohamed Bin Hammam made payments totalling around five million dollars to football officials in return for votes for Qatar.

A statement released by CAF said the allegations against Cameroonian Hayatou were "fanciful", "ridiculous" and formed part of a "smear campaign" against him.

"Issa Hayatou has denied categorically the allegations of corruption published by the UK Sunday Times in its edition of 1st June 2014," the statement said.

"Mr Hayatou will not allow journalists once again to attack his integrity and reputation.

"Such allegations are meant to discredit not only him as a person but the whole continent."

Hayatou, a 67-year-old former athlete, who has held his post as the head of African football since 1987, was also accused in 2011 by the Sunday Times of corruption relating to the 2022 World Cup vote in 2010.

"Like in 2011, the CAF president is waiting for the famous evidence from the Sunday Times and reserves the right to take legal action against any of those responsible for the smear campaign against him," the statement concluded.

Qatari organisers of the 2022 World Cup have vehemently denied accusations their successful bid was corrupt, saying Bin Hammam played no "official or unofficial" role in the bid.

I still find it amazing that the place got picked in the first place.

The decision to give it them wasn't crazy, it was downright stupid and these stories will keep coming out and fifa will keep towing the 'we are not corrupt' line

fifa have droped a big bollock here,no one can ever seriously believe that qatar were picked purely on them being the best bid, a country with no football history, no stadiums, a climate that makes physical activities impossible and the population of Birmingham.

Maybe I am being naive but sometimes it takes a glaringly corrupt/stupid move to bring down a rotten institution. Maybe by 2022 the organisation will have been forced to reform itself.

You can live in hope that that will happen, personally i think the only way fifa will ever be Cleansed is if the worlds major football associations demand it, famously only the fa have ever stood up to blatter a few years ago when he was running for re election and the fa lobbied against him carrying on and we ended up looking daft because of it

good to see me blatter saying he will run for re election again after saying he wouldn't do it again

It's always been obvious that people were bribed in regards this decision, because who in their right minds would think that awarding Qatar the world cup was a good idea!!!

Give the bloody thing to us, it would be fantastic. Best stadia in the world, best transport network, well nearly, plenty of hotels and other places for fans to stop. Give it to us.

Hmmm.... England....

Suitable summer climate - tick
Relatively short distances between venues - tick
Excellent existing infrastructure - tick
Venues? Wembley (90000), Old Trafford (75000), Arsenal (60000) St James Park (52000), Sunderland (48000), Man City (46000), Anfield (45000), Villa Park (42000), Chelsea (41000), Leeds Utd (40000) = 10 venues of 40k+ - check.

Opinion - England could stage the tournament tomorrow in an emergency.
Conclusion - England will never be awarded the tournament again by this corrupt lot.

Was a completely ridiculous decision in the first place now what most of us suspected has been confirmed. The decision should be rescinded and I can't think of a better, more ready venue for the tournament than England. Which probably means , as Chris says........

England cant stage the world cup in 2022 because Russia are doing it in 2018, cant stay in Europe two times on the bounce, if its taken off Qatar it'll go to Australia (the best bid anyway) or America

but it wont get taken off Qatar because they have done nothing wrong. Apparently

Australia would hold a fantastic World Cup and the climate at that time of year would be perfect.
Great stadiums and a wonderful place. Good idea.

Don't forget that by the time the 2018 World Cup comes around, West Ham will be in a 60,000 seater stadium!!!

With regards Australia, I do believe that they should've got a shot at it!!!
Sydney
ANZ Stadium 83,500
Allianz Stadium 44,500
(Sydney Cricket Ground is 48,000, but would rather avoid ovals when not necessary)

Melbourne
Melbourne Cricket Ground 100,000
Etihad Stadium 56,347

Brisbane
Suncorp Stadium 52,500
GABBA 42,000

Adelaide
Adelaide Oval 53,500
AAMI Stadium 51,500

Perth
Subiaco Oval will reopen as the Perth Stadium in 2018 60,000 capacity

Canberra
Canberra Stadium to be 45,000 by 2020

So it's fair to say that Australia could certainly host either of the 2018 or 2022 World Cups, and for people worrying about the use of cricket ovals and AFL grounds, although not totally ideal, they're not too bad for football and certainly better than some indoor stadium in the middle of the bloody desert!!!

I get the feeling that the 2022 World Cup will have a new venue to be honest. Quatar got it by bribes and gifts and it will be changed. I fancy Australia to get it. What a World Cup tournament that would be. Probably the best one ever for visiting fans and neutrals.
Huge barbeque's on the beaches, massive after game parties, great country, great people, great stadiums. How could you go wrong with Australia ? You can't is the correct answer.
Nearly forgot, the weather would be perfect in Aus for the tournament. Perfect.
Just watch out for the sharks. Got no sharks, crocodiles ate all the sharks mate. Very Happy

Australia would get my vote.

Weather in June is spot on for football: 20-24 during the day; 17-20 of an evening.

The cities are wonderful, the stadiums are fabulous.

People are unwelcoming, racist, homophobic pricks though.
