Phil Bardsley was my one today!!
Well, actually it was yesterday on the phone to the old man (I basically listen to him go on about Sunderland for an hour then he puts the phone down!!! Anyway, half way through the one way conversation he was on about Phil Bardsley and mentioned him playing for us, and I thought he had gone mad!!
But he did didn't he Wink

Aye. Can't remember him doing much of note for us. I think he spent the previous 6 months on-loan at Rangers who were in the midst of the particularly ill-fated Paul LeGuen era.

I remember traveling all the way down to watch the Villa a couple of seasons back (under Houllier, early January) and Bardsley scoring the winner in a 1-0 win. His first first team goal, I think. FFS. Cold night too.

I liked Luke Young, met him a few times after games in the 09/10 season and he was a really nice bloke, he stopped and had a 15min chat with me and my family the once, I offered him my condolences regarding his brother and he was really grateful. Top bloke and I thought he wasn't a bad RB.

Gavin McCann, i saw something about him last week and had to really think hard about whether he played for us or not.

I'm not saying this just to be another miserable supporter, but there have been genuine times during games this year that I'd forgotten certain players were on the pitch. I remember suddenly going, "Oh yeah, Weimann is playing". Also happened with Agbonlahor. Sadly, this was never the case with Guzan.

Watching the England game the other night, reminded me that Solano played for us. Neve seemed like a Villa player to me.

In the early 2000s there were a few like that. Not just Johnsen, but Leonardson, Kinsella and even Crouch in an odd way.

There was something about that 2002-03 season that just passed right over me. All those players played a great many games in claret and blue, under successive managers, but they just don't seem like Villa players for some reason.

Robert Pires & Robbie Keane. Shame it wasn't when they were in their primes!

Absolutely! I do remember us being linked with Pires around 1998. Anybody else remember that? We were linked with Freddy Ljunberg the following year.

And our fuck-up with Robbie Keane is well documented....

And on that note, Peter Schmeichel! I keep forgetting we had him for a year between David James and Enckleman. As I say, those few years did bring some names to Villa Park!

Not a big name but the Hong Kong 7s tournament reminded me of Stefan (or was it Stephen?) Cooke. Anyone know what happened to him?

So many players where it is a shame they didn't play for us in their primes. Schmeichel, Johnsen, Regis, Ginola... to a certain extent even some of the players who did well for us, like Richardson, Houghton, Townsend, even Merson really.

Could probably do a whole XI!

Then on the flip side we probably got some star players in their actual prime: McGrath, Staunton, Bosnich, Taylor, Young and Barry.

Your suggestion for an XI has given me a few ideas I might pursue later in the week if I have the time.

McGrath was actually 30 when we signed him. Which goes to show - especially when throwing in dodgy knees and alcoholism - just how incredible he was.
