Dean Smith Aston Villa manager
Aston Villa Football Club is delighted to announce the appointments of Dean Smith as our new Head Coach, John Terry as Assistant Coach and Jesus Garcia Pitarch as Sporting Director.
Smith, a lifelong Villa fan, is known for his exciting and attractive brand of football which he implemented in his previous posts at both Brentford and Walsall.
Terry spent the final year of his illustrious playing career at Villa Park as he captained the club to the play-off final last season and brings a wealth of experience with him to his new role from his time as skipper of both Chelsea and England.
And Pitarach has occupied Director of Football roles at both Valencia and Atletico Madrid in his native Spain.
During his time at Valencia, the club won the La Liga title and UEFA Cup and Atletico lifted the Europa League and the European Super Cup during his tenure.
CEO Christian Purslow said: “These three appointments represent the start of a new era and direction at Aston Villa and we are delighted to secure their services after an extensive search.
“Dean has a clear and successful coaching philosophy as well as a real understanding of Aston Villa Football Club. He is also knowledgeable about the Championship.
“The board welcomes him to the club and is looking forward to working with him and his staff.
“John is one of the most decorated players in English football, has an affinity with the club and is ready to make the next step in his career working alongside Dean.
“And Jesus also brings a huge amount of experience in his particular role having worked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe. He will ensure the club has an integrated approach running from the academy through the U23s and into the first-team.”

At least we might have a chance of beating Brentford for once now.

Jumped at the job - where others hesitated.
Reservations yes - but think it is a sensible choice - like the idea of Terry giving his input on the defensive side of things
Lets go lads

Love the appointment, yet fear we should have gone continental.

I'm sure he must have been our first choice all along, we couldn't have sorted out all the compensation and new contracts in the few days since Henry supposedly turned us down, this was probably in the pipeline before Bruce was even fired. Would also explain why we were able to fire all our coaches at once, because we knew that we'd be bringing in Smith's backroom team.

The sacking of the coaching staff makes much more sense now, and yes i think he was most likely first choice all along.
He was also my first choice so i'm over the moon that we got him.

Cannot find any information on Jesus Maria Pitarch. Does anyone have a profile or something?

Did you watch them play Leeds at the weekend? His teams play lovely football and they have a go at everyone, home or away?
If he/Terry can stabilize the defence till January I can see us going after Chris Mepham.
The kids will get a chance too!
Brilliant choice! So proud we now seem to have professionals running our club!

I am hoping the next news will be the sacking of MacDonald. Wait for the Oracle to confirm it.

Re: Dean Smith Aston Villa manager
My first choice from months ago( although I admit that I flirted with Henry last week).
Watched Leeds v Brentford and if he can get us performing like that I will not be complaining (without the Villa trademark late goal against!). Scott Hogan will now show us what he can do in a properly set up team. Kodija out? (not a team player).
JT to sort the defence. Happy days.
PS "There's an "i" in Smith, but no "I" in team - (for the benefit of the big egos in the first team squad).

How long before the "Mepham to Villa" stories begin?

Re: Dean Smith Aston Villa manager
I hope that the Club haven't caused a potential problem by agreeing better terms for JT than DS.
I would imagine not, but I notice that Sky News as already "bigging up" the JT appointment with barely a mention of Dean.
The wage structure/ pecking order will always be important. Human nature.

Are we likely to see a 4-2-3-1 from Smith? I think we will. And Grealish will be the middle man of the forward midfield 3.

After the side he picked last weekend and the negative way he spoke at the presser I hope so too!

Re: Dean Smith Aston Villa manager
A bit hard. I can understand if the new regime wants a clean sweep, but the U23's have been playing some lovely stuff. All the good things that the first team failed at (press, pass and move).achilles wrote:Terry Derry wrote:I am hoping the next news will be the sacking of MacDonald. If you want a reference, our 8-0 hammering of Bristol City last Friday is on Youtube.
I hope the new guys will regularly dip into the U21's for people like O'Hare and Bedau to name just two. These guys can play.

Re: Dean Smith Aston Villa manager
Agree with the comments that Smith must've been approached earlier because it was such a quick appointment after the media said we'd been let down by our top targets. Felt like it was taking forever at the time tho!
Hopefully Terry was paying attention to who-was-who around camp last year because it's a real bonus to have someone coming in who knows the place already.
