Aston Villa vs Millwall match thread

Post by AstonThriller on Thu Dec 07, 2017 2:05 pm

The bottom line is this is a must-win game, isn't it? No more, no less. And the importance of winning could be much higher if Sheff Utd vs Bristol ends in a draw tomorrow. Millwall to their credit have done themselves proud this season. They are an "up and at em" sort of team who play with a lot of spirit and grit. So if we're not on our game then they no doubt could leave VP with something. They've made the den a very tough place to go to of late. They were the first to burst Leeds bubble when they were riding high, and just beat Sheff Utd 3-1 at the weekend too. So it won't be an easy game that's for sure. In saying that though, away from home they've found things way more difficult so we just have to hope that our lads are focused and ready to grind out another three points.

I suspect the team will be largely the same as it's been for the last few weeks after having eight days off before this game. Although Grealish and Lansbury might be pushing for a place I guess but I'd be surprised if both were to get the nod tbh.

Indeed, a very tough must win game, just hope the good Aston Villa turn up, Millwall won't need any second invitation to help them selves to some points.

Jeez I remember a truly miserable afternoon in the old second division against Millwall when we lost 1-2 at home. It was fecking freezing, shite game (keown scored for us) and we had some truly great players like Gallacher, Aspinall, Gage and Birch (obviously I'm joking) playing for us. I was so pissed off that when I was walking back to get the number 11 I pushed through the Millwall fans being escorted by the Police and I had my Villa tracksuit top on. Got a few threats but told them to fuck off as I pushed through and nothing happened  (I was plenty relieved after I'd calmed down later!). I reckon it was 1987.
Let's not repeat that scoreline eh!? 2-0 Villa for me. Grealish to score.

Have a bad feeling about this one, just feels like it's going to be one of those frustrating games, nevertheless we really must take all three points, otherwise our automatic promotion chances will be pretty much buried alive.

Seeing a lot of people calling for McKirdy to be called up, and some even suggesting he should ahead of Hogand RHM in the pecking order, at this point I doubt that that's going to happen, if it was, it would have happened by now, he's just not rated, not just by Bruce but by previous managers at the club, he's very similar to Grealish and O'Hare and he's not going to get in the squad ahead of those two.

Because of the eight days rest the team have had, I think I'd probably pick the same eleven, who played against Leeds.

Snoddy to score but we then concede a late equaliser.

Let's be honest, when have you EVER had a good feeling about a game recently? Laughing

Last time, was when I predicted we'd beat Cardiff 3-0. This is one of those where if we do win, we could do so convincingly, but the team have to guard against being complacent. Their bad away form worries me, those kind of runs have to come to an end at some point, hopefully not tomorrow though.

Tbh if we don't beat Millwall we might as well pack up and go home now. Personally I think it will be a routine win for us then it's onwards and upwards to the next game.

To be fair we can't really have good feelings about any matches considering how bad we play.

Might sound overly negative, but there's some truth to that, based on the way we play, I guess we have to take our confidence from recent results.

In other news Bruce has said that Agbonlahor and Hogan are back in training, whatever we feel about their ability, I think that's good news given our striking situation at the moment. To be honest I'm still harboring hopes that Hogan can still make an impact with us.

That's massive news. Hogan has never really had a decent run in the side, has he? And when he's played he's always had the shadow of Kodjia lurking over him. I think this Xmas period is a great chance for him to really make his mark on the side now.

Although I fully expect the side to be the same as against Leeds, I really would like Grealish to play instead of Onomah especially at home. Bruce said that he was basing his team around Grealish before he got himself injured so lets do it!
I just want us to be more positive especially at home and if he doesn't start Grealish now when will he ever start him?
You could also make out a case for Lansbury to start instead of Hourihane, if for nothing else but to keep the players on their toes and say if you play well you stay in the team as Hourihane has been struggling lately.

No ifs or buts this is a game we MUST win, I don't want to be walking away from that ground in another foul mood!

Yeah agreed. I was hoping it would be O'Hare that would replace Onomah but happy if it's Grealish. Either way it should be one of ours second half of the season.

I wouldn't argue with O'Hare either as he certainly deserves a chance but I am fed up of saying that for ages now!
Bruce seems so stuck in his safety first methods that he doesn't seem to be able to allow the shackles to be thrown off the team and let them just get at the opposition!

A comfortable win would be nice today, seems a while since we've had one in terms of goals. Would like to see goals from Hourihane (who's the last person I'd drop for a game like today's, least of all fo Lansbury), Snodgrass and Davis, who's surely due one.

I'd like to see Grealish start but would be reluctant to bring him in for Onomah, as that would weaken the central midfield.

We are at home when do we actually ever play Grealish then?
We have to try it as potentially it gives us much better attacking options and isn't that what we want?
As well as that Onomah in my opinion doesn't play that number 10 role very well, perhaps Onomah in place of Whelan but that isn't going to happen any time soon!

Lansbury in for Hourihane, that could prove to be a mistake for me, today's exactly the sort of game where you'd think we'd need Hourihane's work-rate and tackling ability, not to mention his threat going forward. Lansbury's been poor on the whole for us.

Good to see Hogan back on the bench.

Onomah is very lucky to start imo. Prob part of loan contract to play so many times. If lansbury starts after Leeds game so should grealish

The individual ability in this team is worse than what I see in Norwegian teams. Absolutely scandalous how these guys are coached
