Hopefully so, as it stands looks like we'll have to beat Albion over two legs, and then one of Derby or Leeds in the final. Going to be tough however which way it pans out, anyone can beat anyone.

I'm not sure why though, no reason to think that Sheffield United would be any easier, they're acutally in much better form than Leeds, and have been since the turn of the year.
Also Derby looking like favorites to get sixth spot now, if they beat Swansea in the week, then Middlesbrough will need a big turn around in goal difference on the final day to catch them. And if we want to finish above Albion, we now have to beat both Norwich, and Leeds, and hope that they lose to Derby on the last. We could also still finish sixth ourselves, there is part of me that thinks that Leeds in the semi final, might be an easier game than Albion.
Albion are more dangerous than Leeds because they have two CFs on 20+goals each, and both of those CFs don’t mind cheating to get a goal. Gayle, in particular, spends most of his time in the penalty box on his arse with his arms in the air.

Totally agree Dazzle he makes Tom Daley look like an amateur, DS has put a strong team on the pitch today lets hope it brings the rewards. UTV

I'm not confident of us winning the play-offs, I'm not even confident that we're going to beat Albion in any of the two legs, let alone over the both of them. But as long as FFP doesn't hit us too hard, or as long as we don't end up with a big points deduction, or a transfer embargo, then I think next season with Smith we'll be challenging for top two, even without Grealish.
That said if I was a neutral, I'd probably have us down as favourites, since Smith came in we've taken more points than any of the other play-off teams, including Leeds, and our form has been on an upwards trajectory, it's not as if the majority of our wins came when he first came in, we've been steadily improving. When all is said and done, I think we've also got the best squad of players out of all the play-off teams as well, but in one off games anything can happen, I think a lot of it's going to depend on our mental strength.

Barcelona showing tonight that even if you get a good result in the first leg, you've still got to come back and do it in the second leg as well. Also goes to show the massive advantage of playing the return fixture of the semi final at home, with the crowd behind you.
Since Smith came in, I've been waiting and expecting us to beat someone by five or six in one of the games, hasn't happened yet, would be handy if we could do it on Saturday, even better if we could do it in the final, but have to get there first.
I've actually got a feeling the game on Saturday is going to end up in a draw, but I think we're capable of going to The Hawthorns and getting a win. Which is what happened last season, we beat Middlesbrough at their ground, and got the draw at Villa Park.

I don’t think it matters much to us if we play home or away, and that’s got a lot to do with our style of play which is down to Dean Smith. What I’ll say about us, now, is that we can defend very well at the level we’re playing at. Barcelona, even in that 1st leg, looked like they could concede goals to Liverpool and the 3-0 scoreline flattered them. Villa have proven this season that being 2-0 down, or even 3-0, isn’t enough to see us off. And over the last 2-3 months we’ve barely looked like anyone could get that sort of lead over us, it’d be really out of the blue now to see a championship team tear through us and score 2 or 3 goals without any reply from us. And that’s a good base to work from. The tie with WBA will not be won by either team in the 1st leg, it’ll take until the final whistle at the hawthorns to be sure. The psychology changes when teams think they have matches won, even the best teams in the world have slipped up when seemingly out of sight. Though I wouldn’t be happy, I’d still feel 100% that we were still in the tie if we went to the hawthorns a goal or two behind, In the same way that I won’t think we’ve got the tie in the bag if we go there with a 2 or 3 goal lead.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
What's more, we have a full complement of defenders - Elmo and Hutton at RB, Tuanzebe, Chester and Elphick at CB(r), Mings at CB(l) and Hause and Taylor at LB. Take your pick! For me it's simple, Elmo - Tuanzebe - Mings - Taylor. That's not my ideal defence (De Laet - Chester - Mings - Hause!) but it's the defence that's settled and works. Stick Hause and either Elphick or Chester on the bench and we're covered.
Remarkably I don't think Elmo or Hutton are good enough at RB, and Taylor is only just coming back into form, but they're what we have and more than good enough for what's coming. I wonder if we'll try to keep Hause next season, in whichever league we end up. If we stay in the Championship then Chester and Mings in the middle, Hause and the new kid at full back is easily a good enough defence. I bet Mings would stay with us to captain the side.
Anyway, I digress. I think the main thing we need in these playoffs is a referee who'll protect our players, especially Jack. Everything else is in place, it's things out of our control that could scupper this promotion push.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
Last night saw another unlikely semi-final comeback, I really don't want Tottenham winning the champions league though, only five English sides have won it, ourselves included of course, and I'd like to keep it that way, it was bad enough when Chelsea won it a few years back, without Spurs doing the same. Not only that but if they did win it, and we failed to go up, it would only drive home just how far we've fallen behind them in the last ten years.
I actually hate the play-offs, easily the most nerve wracking I've ever felt about football as there is so much riding on them, and last season when we lost probably the worst I've felt after a result, not sure if I'd be worse this year because it would have happened two years in a row, or if I wouldn't feel so bad about it, because I'd have more faith in Smith getting us up automatically next year, as I say probably depends on what the FFP situation is.
Hopefully we can do it this time though, in less than six days we'll know if we've reached the final or not, and then the wait for that will drag and drag, if we do make it.

Seeing people rave about Leeds as if they're Barcelona after they won yesterday. Yes they're a good side, but aside from the first ten minutes Derby didn't really turn up, so it was easy for them. They were also lucky because Klich should have been given a red card for that headbutt, how he got away with just yellow card I'm not sure.

Yes, perplexing. I was under the impression that as a ref if you are sure enough [that it is violent conduct] to produce a yellow for it then you actually have to give it as a red. Didn't think there was a "half measure" for something like that, but I'm not a referee.

As with Hourihane, the ref has dealt with it at the time, anyhow Klich is one of the players we need to see when Karma pays Leeds back in two weeks

Re: Promotion discussion thread
Tonight we learn who our opponents in the final are going to be, many seem to be presuming that it's going to be Leeds, but if Derby have one of their good days tonight then they're capable of winning.
I'm not exactly sure who I'd prefer, I imagine most would say Derby as we've beaten them comfortably twice already, but I do worry that that could lead to us becoming complacent, and it kind of feels like they're due a win against us.
With Leeds my only worry would be that the hype that surrounds them would get to our players, if it's them we have to remember that they're not as good as people make out, we've taken more points than them since Smith took over, in fact we did better last season under Bruce than they have done this season, same amount of points, but better goal difference.

Derby it is, then. We have to find our sharpness in front of goal again, that cutting edge in the final third. Last seasons final defeat should harden our resolve to win. We must improve on recent performances.

It should be a good game but we need to be on our "A" game, we don't need any mistakes this is a great chance lets not blow it, UTV

The remarks from DS about not winning the game, but he had planned for penalties, we have beaten Derby twice , but this is Wembley, I am sure DS has a plan, just hope the team get the win. We have a much better defence then Leeds, I would like to see two strikers up front, and please no short corners, just mix it up. UTV. And best of luck at Wembley

Should be a good game against Derby. We need to attack, attack, attack, and get an early one. I know for a fact Dean smith will not shut up shop. We need to win and win well.

Can't help but to get my hopes up now, if we turn up and play at the levels we're capable of then we will have an excellent chance, we will need to improve upon our performances against Albion though, it would be gutting to get this far, and then let ourselves down by freezing on the day.

I'm dreading the disappointment that I'm going to feel if we lose on Monday, a while back a game against Derby with promotion being guaranteed if we beat them, would have seemed like the best outcome we could have hoped for, but the more I think about it, the better in my mind that they become, and the more I worry that we're going to blow it.
Really need our big players to have good games, if Grealish, McGinn, Abraham, play to the high standards that they've set themselves then we'll at least have a chance, just one more result needed to go our way.

Need to get back to the high tempo, high press game we were playing when we were looking good. Cant afford to have Jack coming deep for the ball and need to shore up the midfield, too many time weve let someone through on a mazy run.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
Yes, most importantly we need to play as a team rather than relying on individuals, also need our defense to have a good game. Seeing a lot of debate over who starts out of Whelan and Hourihane, I do wonder if there's a way we could fit Hourihane in over Adomah or Green, but then again that would probably require to much rejigging of the team, I'd also be tempted to play Adomah on the left, as that's where he had most of his success in front of goal last season, and he could get back and help mark Wilson, and have El Ghazi on the right, if not working they can always just swap.
But then again I can also see the arguments for playing Kodjia, strange but understandable that he and Hourihane might miss out on such a big game, despite only Abraham scoring more goals than them.
As for the outcome, I think it's going to come down to who handles the pressure the better on the day.

Yes always good to have options on the bench, no good starting with all our danger man, leaving the team disjointed and then when we need to turn things around we can't because there's no one to bring on.
I guess this time tomorrow we'll know if we've made it or not.

I'm thinking Adomah on the right wing and bring on Green for a little unpredictability.
