Not sure it matters which year it is as long as Steve Bruce is manager.

Whilst Bruce is in charge and we have an old boys network at the club keeping him in a job, then I'm drained of any hope of us doing anything whatsoever. The club despite all it's talk, is stuck in the dark ages, and not going anywhere fast.

Christ the results are going badly for us at the moment - as it stands if Ipswich and Preston score well be joint tenth and would need to win today just to claw back into 6th.

Not a chance of promotion at this rate. Not a single chance in the world.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
We are crap!
I've been working at a few clubs recently including Derby, Burton and VP and i have watched Leeds, QPR, Sheff Utd, Ipswich, Sunderland and one or two others over the last four or five weeks and i have to say compared to all of those (except Burton) we are blunt in attack and shockingly error prone defensively since Terry got injured.
Automatic promotion has clearly gone now as there are better teams ahead of us who will pick up more points than us this season.
We do have a long shot through the playoffs (If we can get Terry & co back fit in time before we are cast adrift) but i frankly do not expect us to beat any of those teams above us over two legs so for me it's all about next season now and can we keep hold of our better players or not in the summer. (Not that there are many i'd lose any sleep over if they left)
As for next season?
Well it's gonna be tough, the only advantage we have is that some players would still choose us over most Championship clubs due to the name Aston Villa and the size of stadium & crowds we attract. Basically i now see us as the best shop window for Players to be seen in when prem clubs come browsing, nothing more.
Finances will be pathetic from now on as parachute payments end and those ridiculous FFP club wrecking rules continue to prevent Xia from competing with the newly relegated clubs.
The only way i see us having a chance next season is by selling one or two of the higher value players for a decent amount and reinvesting the money. This likely means we have one last shot at it before becoming another Leeds / Forest etc.
All in all it does not look good & neither does this current team! No way is Jedinak a defender and we just lack spark all over the pitch.

But that is only because I detest the PL so much with its money(£75 million on a okay centre half, you just got to be joking), I appreciate that we need promotion if only to get back in the limelight and the money, unfortunately.

Some of our supporters like this shit league because they can drink throughout games, rarely watching a minute of play.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
Bar the Derby game, results really couldn't have gone much better. Yes, seeing those pr/cks Wolves win again isn't great, but it did us a massive favor as It's dragged us closer to Bristol again. Sheff Utd continue to falter, Leeds slipped up at the sty and Cardiff are falling apart. The only side who's staying on track are Derby but I honestly believe they will fall too in due course. Fulham are a bit of a worry aswell tbh because they are in red hot form right now.
Anyway, the next round of games are interesting.
Villa vs Bristol
Derby vs Sheff Utd
QPR vs Cardiff
Preston vs Boro
Leeds vs Forest
Fulham vs Ipswich
Wolves vs Brentford
So many of our rivals are likely to drop points.

I said at the start of December that if we could be within six or seven points of second place come January then we will have done okay and might have a chance of going for second place, but looking back on December it feels like a lost opportunity.
I don't think Derby are all that great, and they'll go on a bad run at some point, but inevitably so will we.

Tbh we've had a damn tough schedule this month, haven't we? Derby, Millwall, Sheff U, Brentford, Boro etc. And all while we've had a lot of injuries. The truth is we could potentially be just four points away from 2nd after the Bristol game. Which would be amazing considering the situation we've been in.

If we could have beaten Derby, we would be in second place now on goal difference. Nice to be back in the play-offs though, and hopefully these two wins against decent sides can give us the confidence to go on and have a good second half to the season, suddenly automatic promotion looks like it might be doable again.

Honestly don't think we have the slightest chance of going second. Play-offs if we're lucky.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
It's mainly the lack of quality from the teams around us that's giving me hope, Wolves are the only real quality side in the division. we've just had a disastrous December and somehow still find ourselves only five points adrift, if we can't kick on after a result like today's then I'm not sure when we can, hopefully a few decent loans can help make a difference as well.

Rolling off a 2-1 loss into a 5-0 win via 1-0 win...?
I'm not looking more than one game into the future. Anything is possible with this feckin club.

Have to agree besides wolves theirs nowt in this division. Today Bristol C were without their first choice keeper and it showed - a similar thing happened to Shef U when a key player got injured.
We have looked poor for much of the season and yet have kept in the mix despite long term absence of Terry, Kjodia, Grealish, Green, Jedinak. As the players return can we bridge a 5 point gap to Derby ? tall order but not beyond us IMO.

Well we're home to Wolves, Leeds, Preston, Derby and Cardiff so whilst they are all tough games it's within our gift to make them count.

We're now seventeen points behind Wolves, which is frankly embarrassing, we're not going to catch them, but we should be looking to close that gap as much as possible before the end of the season.

Yep, it is. I put it down them having an agent ties with an agent that have allowed them to get players from much better leagues, and also a manager who a higher caliber too. I also put it down to them playing against ten men SEVEN times this season which is surely a record of some sort. And lastly, I put it down to the man who manages our team. We knew what he was last season but the board saw fit to retain his services. Just a week or so ago we saw how inept he can be by him deciding to play Jedi instead of Elphick, which cost two games where we could have at least pick up four more points. But I guess it is what it is and Wolves are loving their time in the sun. If they think it will be this rosey in the Prem though they are in for a very big surprise.

Re: Promotion discussion thread
I agree with most of what has been said, this league is really shyte, with the exception of Wolves, so anything is possible especially that second automatic spot. More through luck than judgement we may have stumbled across a formation that the players are happy with and that the players can embrace without any more interference from Bruce.
I was so pleased when Hogan scored as there is a decent player in there and we could easily see the real Hogan now!
The only downside in all this is Bruce and his super negative tactics!

The other day I quoted him saying the pressure of playing for a big club had affected some of the players he'd bought. All a load of bollocks, it's how he sets up the team and sends them out to play that's the problem. I suggest the pressure has got to him and he has no idea what to do. He's been given a huge amount of responsibility and a lot of money to spend to get us into the Premier League and he comes across as someone panicking because he hasn't a clue what to do and is terrified of rocking the boat. He (but I strongly someone else, I wonder what RDM would have done with them) bought three and loaned in one very good players in January in Hogan, Hourihane, Lansbury and Johnstone. You can see Bruce's influence in the summer signings of Whelan and Elmo plus the loan signing of Snodgrass, who played with Elmo under Bruce at Hull when they were promoted in 2015/2016. I've no idea what the plan was for Onomah bearing in mind Bruce was planning a 4-4-1-1 with Grealish behind Kodia and we had Hourihane, Lansbury, Jedi and Whelan behind them (plus Gardner, Tish and academy players). Terry has worked out well but lucky Samba was free. I had high hopes for him!
As an aside, while I was checking on Wikipedia when Bruce and Snodgrass were at Hull I noticed that in their season in the PL in 2016/2017 when they were relegated Snodgrass was their top scorer with seven PL goals (Hernandez scored five in 30 matches). There's an odd coincidence with us right now in that a winger is our top scorer and our strikers are failing to score.

A few stories that Rowett is the first choice for the Stoke job, whether or not that would help us though I'm not sure, depends who they'd replace him with I guess.
