Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
Whilst not overly inspired by the signings, it does make us very strong defensively so now hopefully we will see 1 or 2 good attacking players come in that will make the difference for goals and then we can maybe get excited.
With a couple of good attacking buys i think we would looking strong for a good season.

Ridiculous to sell off Veretout and buy a 33 year old Whelan.

but how can you motivate a player that doesnt want to play for you?
He has stated many thimes that he does not want to be at villa - so bye bye

Totally agree BUT if they don't want to stay then there's not a lot you can do, I thought in the pre-season he was looking happy & having a go so I was hopeful he would stay, it doesn't look like it. As to some other comments about lack of attacking options, we do have lots of options IMO but they dont do the business, what we need is these players to get their finger out and start doing the business, easy to say but not that easy to make happen it seems. I feel that modern players give up the ghost too easily, every season once they feel they have not much chance of winning things they just go through the motions, I feel that now we have a solid base things MIGHT change and the flair players will flourish, Jack Grealish ???????? time will tell a lot depends on how we start if we start well heads will come up and we might see some fireworks, we will have to wait and see.

And another big problem we have as we all know is the amount of dross we have on long contracts (Thanks Lerner & co) who nobody wants at any cost, they are not going to leave just run down their contracts but at some point that will happen and they will be moved out THEN we will have a squad that has potential that wants to win for Aston Villa.

And yet we do have attacking players, they're just being played in a defensive way. How else do we explain the dull football played by these players who, until they joined Villa, were much more attacking and much better players. Do they all get shellshock or is it something the manager(s) and coaches are doing? We seem to be buying the best players and then playing them out of position, or making them play in a completely different way to they're used to. I still see no point buying more attacking players when we have perfectly good ones. I don't think it's their fault they're being played incorrectly.

One of the most nailed on posts I've seen if I may say so.
I was about to say that we need more attacking creativity in midfield but what's the point in signing additional players of that ilk if SB has no idea how to use them.
I'm pretty certain that our defence will be in the top 4 efficiency wise this season but our scoring potential - give the way SB will set us up for games - will be bottom 6.
Mid table beckons again IMHO if SB stays I'm afraid.
JT player manager, for better or worse, by Christmas.

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
Hourihane, Lansbury, Adomah are all players who've shown that they can get plenty of goals and assists in this division, Grealish and Green will make a difference as well, if they're given a run in the side. We've got the strikers in Kodjia, Hogan and McCormack who can score goals and in McCormack's case he was also one of the best creators of goals in the division before last season.
So Bruce doesn't really have any excuses for there being a lack of creativity, he just needs to pick the right players, with the right formation and encourage them to attack the opposition, rather than putting too much emphasis on 'grinding out results', and 'earning the right to play'.

I am still trying to work out why SB bought Hogan as he really isn't the type of player that suits us at all, as we don't create anything from midfield or actually play through midfield.

veretout hasn't got anywhere near the fight and will to win like Whelan has, would have Whelan any day over JV.

Oh I agree. I just think it's a shame we stock up on old cloggers when we can get young modern footballers going. Guess it's a coaching thing

Re: Summer transfer window 2017/18
I like both Whelan and Veretout as players, out of the two I would have preferred JV, because he offers something different, but if he wants to leave, then there's not much to be done about it.
Signing Whelan indicates to me that we're always going to play with at least
one defensive midfielder, either Whelan or Jedinak, when for most games we really shouldn't need one at all, as was proved by teams succesful in this division last year.
Speaking of midfielders apparently Gardner hasn't gone with the rest of the squad to Germany and HITC (who I don't think are very reliable) are saying that he's subject of interest from other Championship clubs.

One thing we and SB made the agreement is to trim the squad to 19-20 and pick 5-6 youngsters to train with the 1st squad this season.
I like the sound of that, but we've got a lot players to sell before we reach that target.

Tough challenge if that's to be this season. The youngsters that would seem to be pushing for 1st team squad would be Green, Davis, RHM, Suliman, and perhaps Borg. There'd have to be one hell of a sales avalanche to trim down the existing 1st team squad! We'd be looking at shifting the likes of Richards, Elphick, De Laet or Hutton or both, Amavi, Cissokho, Tshibola, Veretout, Gardner, Agbonlahor or McCormack, Bacuna or Lyden..........a lot of players to get to the numbers suggested by the Doc. I can't see Richards going anywhere, not even if we try giving him away, he'd need paying up big time to get him out the door.

Pleased with the Samba confirmation, probably more so than any other off-season news so far. Official welcomes, maybe a good season will lead to another.

Yes, I am pleased with this especially as he has been training with us for the last six months without getting paid, so it says a lot for his attitude which I greatly admire in this day and age.

I think that is extremely optimistic but it depends who they class as 'youngsters''?

I see McCormack hasn't gone to Germany with the rest of the squad, he might just be injured, but if he's on his way out, then he's someone that we will need to replace.

Yeah just read we look to be moving on McCormack, Tish, Gardner and Elphick. I hope it's true.

Yeah me too. If we could get 15-18m back off of that (Ross 8m, Gardner 2m, Elphick 2m, Tish 3m) I'd be chuffed to bits. Think Tish is most likely to go out on loan again though tbh.

Think we'd be lucky to get £ 9 million tbh, but I guess there's a lot of wages there.

Nixon once again saying that Hutton is set to sign for Wednesday. Will be interesting, to see if plays in the 'cup of traditions' today.

I suppose with Elmo and Bree we can afford to let him go, although we have no cover at left back if Amavi goes which I hope he does as that we generate a lot more money than Hutton leaving.
