Alan Hutton: a new contract

Post by Trotters on Fri Mar 03, 2017 2:58 am

It seems that he's been offered a new 2-year contract.

For:
He puts in his best effort, week in, week out.
His last 3 games have been very good.
He's never acted the cock or said anything bad about the club even when he was put in the Bomb-Squad.
He's decent cover for Bree (what I've seen of DeLaet - not much I grant you - he looked pretty average so I don't see the point).

Against:
He's a championship player so if we want to stay in the championship...
He tends to switch off and drop at least one big bollock every game. Sometimes it costs us, sometimes he gets away with it.
Wages?
He can't cross a ball. He can bomb down the wing but he cannot cross a ball. At all.

Over to you...

Story has come from an unrealiable twitter account (incogavfc), although I wouldn't be surprised if they've guessed right and he is offered some sort of extension. I'd let him go though, as I think he's a big weak spot in our team, especially from an attacking point of view, teams leave him with so much space knowing that our players will take the easy option and pass to him, then he does nothing with the ball.

I'd keep him. Ability aside he is good cover and his atttitude is the kind we could do with having around

Keeping him wouldn't be the worst we could do, however, we're heading into better and hopefully more successful times and we need winners.

Is he trying to impress to get another contract? Maybe, but in the end he doesn't have the talent to get into my SQUAD.

Nice bloke and a hard worker but sadly, not good enough.

De Laet was on the piss the other night at the casino (along with 2 others who were all shit at poker), he appears to be mental! and I'm discounting him in the long run.

IMO we need another RB for sure. As hard as Hutton works I'd play Bree for the rest of the season to find out if he's a good enough 1st choice.

If he still cannot get game time I'd move mountains to bring in Trippier. Making Bree backup leaves no room for Hutton.

Until we're at the stage where we've either signed a prem-quality right back or we're in the premier league again and not looking back, I'd keep Hutton. I think he's JUST good enough as cover for Bree until we get back to the top flight. And the soonest that will be is next season which would leave Hutton as surplus to requirements AND have a re-sale value on him.

For me, I think we should keep until we get a proven, solid replacement. A 2 year contract is fine with me.

Keep him for the attitude - it sets a good example & should be seen to be rewarded sometimes. Talent''s no use at this level without the work ethic (as we hope Grealish is learning).

I don't have a problem with giving him a 2yr contract on a reduced salary from his premiership days.
He gets the ball such a lot because he never hides and is one of the few who actually wants the ball and is always willing to drive at the oppostition, again one of the very few who will take an opponent on. Having said that he has his limitations but don't most of the players?

De Laet was excellent for Leicester (in the Championship) and decent for Middlesbrough when played at Right-back (he was often asked to play left-back, where apparently he wasn't as good). And was actually brought in as Hutton's replacement.

Would be a big mistake to offer Hutton a new contract on the back of 3 good performances, it's time to move on. Thank Hutton for his efforts, but for me going forward, Bree should be first choice, with De Leat in reserve.

He hasn't been "offered" a contract. He's managed to trigger an appearance clause that allows him to have another year here. I wanted him out but I guess another twelve months isn't too tragic. Hopefully he will depart the same day as Gabby and we will be back in the prem and looking forward to much better quality arriving at VP again.

Exactly. The club had no choice and Bruce had to play him with Bree injured.

There's some huge over-reaction on Twitter going on but even th Th he's not brilliant, he doesn't hide and he seems a lot better with a more competent midfield in front of him.

@deadbuzzardalive I'll have to take your word for it regarding DeLaet. I can't say I've ever noticed him before so I'm only going off his extraordinarily short spell for us. Which might be unfair. Wink

I can't say I saw heaps of him myself at his previous clubs. I was mostly going by comments I'd read from fans of those clubs, and the fact that he managed to get promted with both of them. Hard to judge him on his time with us, as I think he only played about three games.

Hutton all in all has been poor for us, even this season at a lower level. I couldn't imagine him being part of a promotion chasing team.

But if Hutton accepts this contract extension clause thing, then I suspect that we'll have to sell De Laet, because of wages.

As I said before, if his ability matched his heart, we'd be campaigning to keep him.

That said, he's ok for backup if not a starter and I'd like to see how he fits in if the team really starts upping the ante and firing on all cylinders.

Maybe an offer of a 1yr with a performance-related extension if certain targets are met would be more suitable.
