I don't want to think about the consequences of failing to get promotion, but if the worst happens it's ironic that if we are on a shoestring we probably have the best crop of home grown players in quite a while. Obviously it's predicated on Bruce getting the heave ho otherwise we'd be bolstering the side with ex Prem 40 year olds. As I say, if it does come to the worst and we get a young dynamic manager that wants to utilise the youth players we have a very good selection that if gelled with those current first readers who stay, might just tear up the championship next season.
Hope it doesn't come to that but if it does I'd love to see a young team of villa lions really go for it with no fear..

U23s v Norwich tonight.
Live stream on the Mail website if anyone fancies watching our excellent academy lads

Aston Villa's next generation take on Norwich City at Villa Park tonight - and you can watch it.

The Young Lions have been superb this season and pushed Blackburn Rovers extremely close for the Premier League 2 title.

Kevin MacDonald's side have been forced to settle for the play-offs and could come up against tonight's opponents Norwich.

This match kicks off a big week for Villa, who take on Leicester City in the Premier League Cup semi-finals on Friday evening at the King Power.

With that match in mind, MacDonald has decided to rest Callum O'Hare for tonight's match. The coveted 19-year-old has been in breathtaking form for the U23s this season and claimed the academy player of the year award last night.

The likes of Easah Suliman, who has returned from his loan spell at Grimsby Town, Jordan Lyden, Jake Doyle-Hayes and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy are involved for Villa though and a bumper attendance is expected.

Just beat Reading 4-3 in the play-off semi final, to be honest it was quite a sloppy performance defensively, but we were by far the better team, Hepburn-Murphy is a class above anyone else at that level, scored a brilliant winner in the 95th minute.

Rushian's winner...

Aston Villa U23s are Premier League Cup champions after beating Swansea City on penalties.

Kevin MacDonald's side drew 0-0 with the Swans in normal time and couldn't find a winner in time added on, either.

But in the shoot-out they were deadly - Jordan Lyden, Kelsey Mooney, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, and Jack Clarke all converting - while the hosts failed to score a single penalty

Better report from the OS:

Villa U23s win Premier League Cup!
Match report: Aston Villa U23s win Premier League Cup!
Game details
Match: Swansea City U23s v Aston Villa U23s
Date: Friday 4th May 2018
Competition: Premier League Cup Final
Venue: Liberty Stadium
Kick-off: 7pm

Analysis
Aston Villa U23s triumphed on penalties to lift the Premier League Cup after a goalless 120-minute draw with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

Jack Clarke netted the decisive penalty to win the Young Lions the trophy, after Jordan Lyden, Kelsey Mooney and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy also scored from the spot.

Matija Sarkic made two excellent saves to deny the Swans in the shootout – more than playing his part in the victory.

It was the third Cup match in succession that Villa went to either extra-time or penalties, having also got past Middlesbrough and Leicester City in additional time.

Villa had their chances in the 90 minutes to go ahead, with Corey Blackett-Taylor's cross hitting the post, Callum O'Hare missing a close-range header and Hepburn-Murphy shooting down the middle while one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

In extra-time, it was the Swans who were dominant, with the claret and blues having to defend hard to take the game to penalties.

Once there, though, they oozed confidence and class from 12 yards to defeat their opponents 4-2 and lift the Cup.

Kevin MacDonald's side now turn their focus to the Premier League 2 Division 2 Play-Off Final at Villa Park in the coming weeks.

Line-up

Mitch Clark is going to be a player. Very impressed with him and he looks like captain material one day. Green and Hepburn Murphy look sharp but o'hare, beyond finding a pass looks light years away from grealish at the same age.

Going on todays performance there isn't much else in this squad that will trouble the first team. Hope I'm wrong though

Just watched a very disappointing U23s v Stoke.
Villa spurned the chance to go top with a 0-3 defeat to stoke.
Villa lost main man kelsey mooney to a loan so were lacking somewhat, but i was surprised just how lightweight we were, constantly muscled off the ball by stoke.
Charlie Adam pulled the strings all night for them and O'Hare missed a pen at 0-1, but even so we were poor.
Blackett-Taylor in particular was bad tonight and RHM just outmuscled all evening.
Need a big improvement next game away at Saints.

We just beat Saints 0-1. Two players stood out, Blackett-Taylor and Bedeau. I'd play them both in the cup match.

I think I'd introduce Bedeau to the match day squads, and bring him on in games where we're comfortable as a left-back, just to get him used to the pace of the game and give him some experience, but in a position where if he makes a mistake it won't be as costly as if he was playing in central defence... Similar to what United have been doing with Tuanzebe.

As for Blackett-Taylor, like Hepburn-Murphy, Doyle-Hayes and O'Hare, he probably should have gone out on loan, playing u23 football is no good for their development, and if Bruce isn't going to use them, they will just stagnate... He'll be 21 in a couple of days as well, and according to transfermarkt has played all of 12 minutes for the first team, at the moment in Bruce's eyes he'll be behind all of El Ghazi, Bolasie, Adomah, Elmohamady, Grealish and probably even Kodjia for a place on the wing, in fact I'm pretty sure that Bruce would play Bjarnason out wide ahead of him as well... As with tow of our other youngsters now in their twenties Lyden and McKirdy, I'm struggling to see a path for him into the first team.

I see that we drew with the Baggies U23s with a weakend squad, could this mean that Smith is considering them likes of O'Hare and Beadeu?
