Norwich v Aston Villa, Carrow Road, Tuesday 13th Dec. 17.45. Build up and matchday thread.
Now the games come thick & fast! well I redeemed myself as thread-starter last time out, with Villa scraping a 1-0 win (as I predicted in the Wigan thread opener) but only via a Super-Jack wonder-strike, which did little to mask the win-ugly-but-definitely-under-par-performance that Steve Bruce and the team laid out before the watching near-30k attendees.
And so we move on to Norwich, a team that started the season so strongly, and yet who have really struggled of late, with many canaries' fans calling for Alex Neil's head (and with a forehead like that, it would be a heavy head.....). Neil bemoaned what he called Norwich's "soft centre" of late, but it remains to be seen whether or not Villa can capitalise on that, not being noted for our physical battling prowess, and definitely being noted for our midfield frailties. Norwich are a team that will try to retain possession, and are pretty good with the ball. It's when they have to chase the game, against "in-yer-face" opposition that they struggle. In my opinion, if Steve Bruce adopts the same tactics and approach as against Leeds, we will lose. We have to go at them from the off, with an aggressive and attacking intent, anything else and I think Norwich will win. They really are a chalk and cheese side though - losing 5-0 at the end of October to Brighton, and winning 5-0 against Brentford on December 3rd.
Whilst The Canaries will be undergoing a crisis of confidence, the introduction of Olsson & Mulumba galvanised their underperforming midfield on Saturday, and they ended up unlucky not to grab a last gasp draw. I expect to see them selected for the Villa game, which will flesh out their previously exposed middle of the park.
At the time of writing, no info regarding injuries -especially Baker - so I assume all is as was before the Wigan game. I will be bitterly disappointed if Gardner has any involvement whatsoever - I would far rather see Bacuna in (obviously I'd far rather see Tish or Green in, but it seems more likely I'll see Santa Claus before I see either of them picked in the squad).
stating the obvious really, but the result will depend heavily on which Villa turns up. If we go for it, knowing Norwich are not in a good place confidence-wise at present, and hustle and press for the ball, I thoink we'll win 2-0. If we do similar to Leeds, I think the result will be similar to Leeds.
Given that I'm investing in 11-12 hours of driving (Devon/Tamworth/Norwich/Tamworth/Devon, involving getting home around 3.30 am then up to cycle into work at 7.30 am, for the love of McGrath please make it the former, not the latter outcome.
Looking forward to singing

Great stuff DK. What I find interesting is looking at the away games we've already had thus far.
Sheff Wed
Reading
Derby
Birmingham
Brighton
Leeds
Preston
Barnsley
All of them are currently above us right now and when you add in Norwich we will have gone to most of the toughest away grounds already. The only tough ones left will be Newcastle and Fulham (and maybe Huddersfield if they are still in the race) which come after the transfer window closes so we'll be stronger by then. Imo this is good because it means we could potentially have a much stronger team in the second half of the season and we'll be playing our rivals at home whilst playing the "easier" away fixtures too...so it could all work in our favour.
Anyway I'd stick with the same team that won at the weekend tbh. If Tish could play instead of Gardner then fair enough but barring that I'd keep it the same. Fully expect the game to be different as Norwich will have to come at us and that should leave loads of space in-behind. One thing that has been a major problem for them this season is defensively they have been absolutely shocking. They currently have the THIRD WORST DEFENCE in the whole division having let in 32 goals thus far. So one has to believe that if our forwards are up for it then they could have a very good night.

Tomorrow night will suit us much better as at least Norwich will come at us and that will create opportunities, although we hardly attack with any pace or counter attack.
Would consider swapping Gardner for Westwood, just the lesser of two very poor players!
Ideally I would like Bacuna back in the side but Bruce doesn't seem to fancy him for some reason and Tish appears to be still struggling with his injury so won't start.
If we could win this game it would be brilliant and certainly put a marker down to rest of the league.

Great post AT - I hadn't looked at the away list in that light - lets hope that any strengthening only helps to get the away wins in 2017. I agree that their defence is poor but even Neil has admitted that they are often overloaded due to the midfield simply caving too often and too easily. TBH whatever the reason, if Adomah and Ayew get in the game fully, we've no reason to think a win couldn't be on the cards - Kodjia is class, Jacky-boy is getting better each game and the clean sheet will help our defensive confidence. As long as SB tells Hutton he's never to try and cross, ever again, we'll be fine!
Achilles - yep Westwood for Gardner I would agree - if genuinely no other choice, but if we are to give Norwich that weak-midfield deja vu feeling, I think we need more physicality in order to intimidate them, and that has to be Bacuna alongside Jedi for me.
I'd go
..............................Gollini
Hutton Chester Elphick (assuming Baker injured) Amavi
Adomah Bacuna Jedi Grealish
..........Ayew
..................Kodjia

I really hope that Grealish plays further forward than he did on Saturday especially in the first half.
He seems to have this tendency to pick the ball up off our back four, playing deeper than either Gardner and Jedi, he is no danger to the opposition doing that, he must be further up the pitch driving at the opposition, that is when he is at his most dangerous.

We must win one of these upcoming away games, 4pts from these two will do and id rather beat Ian "used to be a big club" Holloway any day of the week.
I'm going for a Desmond Tuesday, and a 0-4 away win against the JumpJockey on Sunday!

We've also played some other tough teams away like Ipswich and Bristol City. The second half of the season will see us play the likes of Wigan, Blackburn, Burton, Rotherham, Cardiff, Brentford and Forest to name a few. We get positive results in these games, especially if we have extra quality by then, then our fate could very well end up in our own hands because all our rivals will be coming to VP .

Great posts there I can only totally agree, I think our lightweight midfield need to work their socks off I would tend to hold Hutton back from bombing forward cos when he gets there his crosses are rubbish, he could tuck in a little that would stop the midfield getting caught out too much IMO, let Adomah fetch and carry the ball when he can feel a bit safer that there is cover behind him, and then for gods sake Ayew can get on the ball and look up for a nice PASS, and not give it away.

2-0 Villa.
Norwich started strongly but I predicted them to struggle before the start of the season and that is setting in now. They've no money and trouble behind the scenes, their early form distracted from that but now everything is coming home. Sad as I do actually like Alex Neil as far as young up and coming managers go

Should add some extra spice as it looks like we're in for Robbie Brady for £10 mill.

Re: Norwich v Aston Villa, Carrow Road, Tuesday 13th Dec. 17.45. Build up and matchday thread.
Need to win this one and start seeing some reward for our good form. Can't believe we've only lost one in ten, having won more than we have drawn of the rest, yet we still find ourselves having to go on a run to break into the play-offs.
Other teams in this division seem to go on runs in the championship and move up the table in no time.
Norwich's form at Carrow Road seems all over the place. On their day they can thrash teams, but they're also capable of losing games they should be winning.
Have a feeling this might be a draw.

@De Kuip Safe journey mate, that's one hell of a trip especially as the A14 is a crappy road at the best of times?
1-0 to the mighty Villa as Brucie's Claret and Blue Army marches on towards the top of the table.

That's the best starting 11 we can put out at this moment, IMO. Possibly Bacuna in for Tshibola.

Wouldn't disagree with that, definitely need an extra midfield player in away from home.

Weve not had many situations so far but every time we do we proceed to cock it up, not much idea. Lets hope we come out of the blocks in the second half.

Being outfought by a team that should be very low on confidence. It would be a great game to win after playing do poorly. Westwood giving us nothing in midfield.
