Villa v Cardiff City. 3pm, Saturday 26th November 2016. Build-up & match thread
Right, thought I'd better start the thread as I'm still unbeaten!
Villa welcome Cardiff City on Saturday - another club enjoying something of a resurgence under a new manager - and in Neil Warnock, someone who could probably boast a promotion record similar to Steve Bruce.
Like him or loath him, Warnock does tend to have that "New Manager Impact" when he goes to clubs. His problem is often that he falls out with someone in the hierarchy and either leaves or upsets someone in charge.
The fact is, he's tightened up the Bluebirds' leaky defence, and also as important, he's got them scoring again. They exposed Huddersfield's preferred 3 man back line in last weeks stand-out 3-2 win, and will undoubtedly bring that confidence into Saturday's game. They did very well from set pieces last week and so the giving away of free kicks in our half could punish us (Alan Hutton take note).
Hoilett had free rein against Huddy and is currently their danger man. I think he'll have a different game against a back 4, but still needs watching as he's happy to track from wing to wing in a free-floating role. Lambert and Whittingham have goals in them as well.
Possible Cardiff team:
21 Amos
2 Peltier
4 Morrison
14 Bamba
13 Pilkington
8 Ralls
17 Gunnarsson
7 Whittingham
3 Bennett
33 Hoilett
19 Lambert
Whilst Villans will remember Whittingham with respect, more for his youth team-level successes, Joe Bennett wasn't too popular, more due to his lack of impact, rather than any attitude issues. Two players currently languishing at Villa would be very fondly remembered by CCFC fans - Rudy Gestede and Ross McCormack, both of whom may not even make it onto the pitch on Saturday, unless injuries elsewhere force SB's hand.
I think we'll need to be on our mettle to defeat them, as they will be confident, but I think we'll have enough to see them off 2-1. They have currently sold 2,400 of their 2,500 allocation, so the atmosphere should be good.

Warnock is a cunning old fox and he will do his utmost to gain a "Big" scalp, so we have to be at our best, hopefully we can get the right result it will be edgy though I think.

They did do well against Blackburn no doubt, but we ain't Blackburn and we will cause them all sorts of trouble. I can see us bossing the game and them only adventuring forward every now and then.
A comfortable but hard fought villa victory.
2-0.

Great intro DK and let's hope you get to do the same for our next match.
Bennett will certainly be out to prove something but I've a feeling he's mentally fragile so a hostile crowd might well ruin his game.
I don't think we'll lose but can't make up my mind whether it'll be a dull 0-0 draw or a very well deserved win.
Hmmmm....I'll go for 2-0 Villa.

Everyone seems to be looking forward to this and confident of a win. Which worries me slightly as that's when it seems that things can go wrong. We'll lose eventually and probably when we least expect it. Hopefully not tomorrow though, just think it might be a bit more difficult than is being predicted.
That said I do think we're due to thrash someone.

Swansea were beating Palace 3-1 then Palace make it 4-3. Now Swansea have gone and scored twice in injury time to make it 5-4.
Another good win for ourselves, in terms of league positioning we still don't seem to be getting the reward for our good form though.

we may not be going up as many places in the table as we want but the points gap between us and the playoff places is now just three points.

Tbh in the main results went our way but imo it's gonna be a slow process. Our aim right now must be to keep chipping away and make sure we're either in the top six or right on the fringes of it by the time the window opens. Then we can bring in some extra quality and really have a good go at it in the second half of the season.

The best thing I can say about our improvement is that when we concede, I don't feel so despondent - I genuinely feel we have what it takes (players & manager) to prevent the old familiar slide.

Not seen any of the game yet, but am seeing more reports of how good Jedi was again? Really chuffed if that's the case. Thinking back to when it appeared he may be a bust.... either he would've come good with a few more games under RDM or RDM really had little or no idea how to get the best out of a player.
Our overall improvement could be benefitting more from time than Bruce specifically, but can't help but feel RDM's shortcomings are becoming exposed more and more.
To your point Dions_Bald_Head, I agree. There was a long period of time (or certainly felt like it) where a goal conceded presented an instant insurmountable challenge and be the death knell of many a game. That losing mentality seems to have been gradually replaced with a bit of much needed chutzpah.

I really feel positive that once the transfer window opens Brucie will beef up the areas that need doing, one addition I would like to see but I have to be realistic and know we wont, is Forestieri from Wednesday, he is always busy making things happen. He does what I've always said we need to do is PASS the ball don't be greedy (are you listening Ayew?) he is a real TEAM player.

Jedinak was tremendous yesterday - just seemed to win header after header in the second half totally dominant. Bruce has all the players organised so each player has a set role to perform. Before bruce we just ran around like headless chicckens - and Jedinak doesn't have the legs for that. Amavi also had an excellent game.
Can't quite beleive the reporting of this - Cardiff started each half pretty well - but the goal they scored was gifted to them - another guy missed a gilt edged header - but over the 90 minutes villa had the much better chances - the penalty we didn't get was pretty much stonewall imo -
I try to balanced in my view but for me at 2-1 villa looked the most likely to go on and score goals 3, or even 4.
The only downside was the poor performance of Ayew. And I have to agree with Warnock grealish's gameplan was to get a player sent off (IMO) - Now I know this happens at every club at all levels. Its not something I like to see. He has the talent to leave a player for dead and get people out there seats. He seems to be throwing his career away by falling over all the time.
Overall we look strong throughout - with options up front and a manager who knows how to use them. Looking good folk....
