Suliman Empty Suliman

Post by Gordonsleftboot Mon Oct 17, 2016 6:51 pm

A Suliman was sent on loan in August. However the team for the U23's tonight reads: Sarkic, Clark, Suliman, Sundman, Leggett, Blackett-Taylor, Hale, Abdo (C), Green, O’Hare, Davis.

I don't believe we have 2 Sulimans, so has he been brought back? And, if so, why?

Also interesting to note that there is no Hepburn Murphy ahead of the game tomorrow at Reading.

There's talk that RHM will be in the squad tomorrow, and he's just picked up the Premier 2 player of the month award as well.
Suliman is back and getting a run out as he hasn't been getting enough game time with Cheltenham. Bruce is watching the U23s at present, who, as I write, are beating WHU U23s 2-0

Yeah Suliman's time with Cheltenham was very much stop, start stuff tbh because when he was getting a run in the team he would then be called up to play for the England u19s and stuff. Hopefully he'll get another loan spell at Coventry, Nott County or somewhere like that.

I'd throw him into the first team. Sink or swim. If you can't compete for a squad position at a Villa side close to be relegated to league one, then you will never make it.

It'd certainly put the wind up a few first teamers.

Isn't he even left footed? I seem to remember him being an option all over the defence. If that's the case it's absolutely utterly incredible how he hasn't been an option considering how shite our defence is.

He is 18 as well. Not like he's 12 years old. Rooney had at that point played in 3 world cups or something.

Either start using these talents, or sell them. Our academy seem pretty fecking pointless.

Lol - that would explain why Rooney looks about 50 now

Players can develop late. At 18 Ian Wright was playing amateur footy and working like an average Joe

Maybe that was Rooney's 'African Age'? Or according to the papers the Home Office criteria for being a child if you come from the Calais Jungle?

I know this thread was titled Suliman, but as it part morphed into a discussion about other youth team players (as well as Wayne Rooney, the Roger Milla of the Premiership) , I thought I'd echo my puzzlement of last night in that Rushian Hepburn-Murphy wasn't on the bench, as he wasn't picked for the U23s game the night before. So unless he's injured, I do not know why he didn't play in either game. I was convinced when he wasn't on the pitch against west Ham, that he'd be in the line up last night. Strange.

Agreed, in my mind he is probably our best prospect and we could do with a bigger goal threat on the bench. Did he sign a new contract that was discussed at the start of the season or is he annoying people by holding out for more cash?

The academy has been a complete waste of time as far as I'm concerned. I'm trying to think who we've used regularly in the first team in the Lambert years and since and have only come up with Baker, Clark, Grealish, Herd, Weimann, Bannan and Gabby.

Bit parts were played by Lichaj, Gardner (G), Albrighton, Robinson, Hepburn-Murphy and Delfouneso.

Who have I missed?

Right now I'm happy we kept Baker and Grealish, wish we still had Clark and Albrighton and am waiting to see how well Gardner does.

Surely we're wasting a huge amount of money running an academy that produces very few players of any note. Lerner might have thrown a load of money at refurbishing Bodymoor Heath but Xia needs to concentrate on the way it's run and make it attractive to the best talent. The academy players need to play the same formations as the first team and the players like Grealish, McCormack, Jedi and so on need to be working with them (http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/6785472/albrighton-hails-pires). Last season Amavi was out after 10 matches and we had everyone and his dog covering at LB until Cissokho was able to come back from loan in January. I seem to recall even Bacuna and N'Zogbia were tried out. I was about to ask if we had the academy players all playing the same formations and tactics as the first team and then remembered Sherwood tried out new formations, mixtures of players and tactics every week. Perhaps once Bruce has his way with the first team the academy can fall into line and if we have any injury problems the junior players can step up and fill any holes?

This is interesting reading:

http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-academy-graduates-whatever-11582956

I just looked through the Chelsea team from that tournament and of the starting 11 Loftus-Cheek plays for Chelsea, two players were released or sold and the other eight are all still Chelsea players but out on loan. Of our players only three are still signed for Villa, with only Grealish playing regularly for us.

Bearing in mind we've spent the last four or five seasons fighting for one of the final couple of spots above the relegation zone it seems a strange decision to loan out players like Robinson and Daniel Johnson to Championship clubs, see them do well, sell them for a pittance and then when we are finally relegated watch them run rings round us. Sure, we're not Chelsea and they do have a ridiculous number of players on loan, most of whom will never play for the first team, but if we're going to attract the best talent with an aim of keeping them we really should be giving them more than the occasional 85th minute substitution appearance.

It's been a waste of time with the managers we've had. If you want to coach any kind of talent and enthusiasm out of a player, promote him to Villa's first team.

I agree foxy the academy is a perennial disappointment. The last time it was any use was when it was Witton bus garage.
Hopefully if we get some stability, continuity and a "Villa way" of playing and ethos at all levels, allied to the youth thinking that is worth going to villa as you get a chance to play in the first team one day, then things will improve. I'm not sure what SB''s record is regarding utilisation of kids in his first teams?

I think the problem with the academy is that all the best ones are being poached by the likes of Arsenal, so we find em, invest loads of time, money and effort into coaching them only to then lose them for peanuts to a "bully" club like Arsenal who just feed off our fantastic academy and offer ridiculous sweeteners to their folks etc. The crazy thing is it's all allowed to happen by the FA!

So really what is the point in the academy?

We are merely coaching the next generation of stars for the "Sky 4" clubs

We're also the top of the tree being the highest rated academy in the country and can take whatever youngsters we like too. And for the same peanuts.

It'll be interesting to see what changes Round brings about to encourage the best kids to come.

Touche. And I think lots of players will develop better and faster if they are thrown into the deep end. At 18 anyway you are a man. You can be sent to war zones, yet at the same time you cant apparantly handle the pressure of AVFC at senior level. Utter rubbish. Sink or swim is the way forward.

There has been too much pressure on us to get results over the last five years for the young 'uns to be given a chance. I bet the last 6 manager wish they had at least tried to blood a few more if they could go back in time.

Pressure on the seniors, yes.

But I suspect a simple "Look son, you're better than that dopey fuck out there. Go enjoy yourself. Do your best but enjoy yourself. No pressure. Whatever happens, happens."

But the youngsters would have been watching manager after manager going grey and shitting themselves. I think Bruce's experience in English football will bring a much needed calming effect to everyone.

Another point here is that we now are in the second tier. Players that haven't been given sufficient pitch time in the Premier League have done really well in this league. If we can't rotate with our best academy players at a time we're in the relegation zone in the championship, then we might as well just close doors.
