Stan Petrov - legend? Empty Stan Petrov - legend?

Coming off a row on twitter with some douchebag called Leighton Castle who is unbelievably moronic, I thought I'd ask the question on here...

Is Petrov a legend?

Douchebag Moron is stating on twitter that he was no better than Westwood and refused to accept he might have had this illness for more than his last few games. My argument - that he couldn't seem to grasp - was that it's entirely possible that Stan was unknowingly playing with this illness for quite some time.

That, to me, is a legendary effort.

Had he been a perfectly healthy man, I'd have not said he was in the "legend" mould. A decent player, yes. A decent captain. An all round good egg. Legend though? Not for me.

That he was playing at the highest level of football whilst having leukaemia and then going on to beat it and help those in a similar boat...well, he'd certainly be a face I'd expect to see in a Villa walk of legends.

Thoughts?

He was on Talksport today and hes not a happy bunny, feeling let down by the club after going through the pre-season games.
Sounded like he was after a pay as you play basis, instead they offered a job with the youths

I had a lot of time for him, and while there are plenty of reasons against calling him a legend, I still think he was ace.

It's sad if he can't understand the reasoning for not offering a 38 year old cancer patient a contract with a professional football club

By the sounds of it though, he wasn't so much after wanting the money but to end his career as a footballer.

Could he have offered something in the last 10-15 minutes in the last few games?

If he was a a striker, I can understand declining him a spot as we're pretty stocked in that dept and he'd be preventing the development of the younger players. But as a midfielder, we're pretty light, are suffering injuries and let's face it, can you imagine the crowd when he comes on? Villa Park would have completely lifted - in a massive way - and even if the players out there were completely knackered, they'd lift for those last few minutes.

It's a long long season, we have game on game on game. A proper contract would have been a little irresponsible. A pay-as-you-play deal for a bloke willing to bust his arse....I have to say that unless it would have used a squad number much needed elsewhere, I don't see the downside.

Have any of the other players come out and said how he was playing? If he was up to the standard?

He's an absolute legend. He fought back from a life threatening illness to train and play for us.

"I don’t hold any grudges, I don’t have any bad feelings towards them but I won’t lie, I was very disappointed I wasn’t offered anything.
Why I wasn’t offered, I don’t know. It wasn’t explained to me. They just told me I wouldn’t be a part of [the team]. They offered me a job in the youth system, but I didn’t want that. I wanted to finish as a footballer.
Why? Because my career was taken away from me by a disease, and I want to finish as a footballer again. I even didn’t want to get paid, I just wanted to finish as a footballer, to be able to retire on my terms.
I completed a full pre-season. It was a lot of running and a lot of double sessions. It was a hell of a lot of running, but I completed every single one. It was good. Now, I’m trying to maintain my fitness.
I think I deserved a little bit more time. If I had a bit more time I would have made it. I would have gotten fitter, stronger. I was close. I didn’t miss a training session and that was the important bit for me.
I sat down with Roberto Di Matteo and thanked him for the opportunity to be part of it again. He wants to build his own team and I can understand that.
I am disappointed and it really hurt me, but life goes on."

If he came on for the last 20 minutes of matches we're winning the roof would come off Villa Park and he'd work his balls off for us. Sadly it's unlikely to happen but no one would hold it against Stan if it didn't work out (well, apart from Leighton Castle).

Do you remember when we had a striker crisis a few years ago and Carew said he'd come back and play for free just to help out?

And how angry Stan used to get when he missed a shot or messed up?

Just another reason why Gabby won't ever be a club legend (well, apart from to Leighton Castle).

Gabby humiliated the clown in one sentence so I don't think legend status will apply for him there.

But you're spot on, he would have worked his arse off because he'd be too proud to let us (and himself) down. That's diametrically opposed to most players we had last season and some we still have.

Proper Ron Saunders 110% attitude. Love him.
