Tony claims De laet was always the first choice. Also Toon's first choice right-back Jaanmat is apparently off to West Ham so that should be interesting.

To be fair it seems likely. We were linked to RDL loooong before Yedlin

Yedlin has the same question marks as De Laet (pace and attacking prowess vs defensive capabilities?) Without the proven Championship experience. I'm not too upset over us going for RDL over Yedlin, he's also able to play across the back 4 so provides cover

Holy cow that's some quality frippit you've posted there 4Bet!
She could definitely get fundamental on my ass.
Just glad it's after work hours - I'm in an open plan office and it's bad enough when loading TBAR pages that the villa flag is grinning out at all and sundry. One glance at your offering and I'd be "equality & diversity-ed" out the door.

I think the extra height will be a benefit over Yedlin in an already not too tall back4.

Agreed plus as others have said offers cover across the back if needed, with - and I never thought I'd say this - the option of Bacuna to cover rb if RDL had to move across.

It's pretty clear from comments far and wide that De Laet is better at going forward than he is defending but Tony has tweeted that this was the player that RDM and his team wanted so I don't think it'll come as a shock to HIM!

Accordingly either they plan on using tactics to suit (3 at the back - Elphick, Chester, Baker - or they figure the lad can be trained....he is still young.

As for that bloke on twitter saying Hutton is good enough for back up, well, you can only assume he's not watched a game for a loooong time or the umbilical cord wrapped around more times than anyone realised.

Hernandez quoted as saying "1 season in the championship is enough. I am premier league"

Kind of flies in the face of earlier comments that he'd jump at the chance of coming to Villa. What's changed there then?

Surely Schweinsteiger wouldn't come to the championship? what a statement of intent that would be though!!

I was thinking the same. I know he may be getting a bit older but I believe if he was used correctly he would destroy the championship.
He wouldn't drop down ....... Would he ?

I can't see it. I'm sure he'd have plenty of other offers from all over the world. To come to Villa, the circumstances would have to be right:

1. Love living and playing in England.
2. Money/percentage of merchandising/promotion bonus
3. A guarantee of playing if fit.
4. Guarantee of promotion first time or he gets released.
5. A willingness to drop down a level in order to become a fan-favourite to fans he knows nothing of.
6. A long(ish) contract that'll see him through to the end of his career with the option of a coaching/management role.

That last one could be the tempter if Tony expands his football empire.

But I just cannot comprehend of this happening.

I can't see Schweinsteiger coming, but a senior in the 33-36 mold to be backup for Tshibola and Jedinak is probably something we need.

Ritchie De Laet, the only player ever to win the premiership and then move down a division to sign for a bigger club.

At £2m we could keep whatever wage structure we have in place and chuck him a few mill signing fee plus some very agreeable terms.

Even though the points aren't coming in just yet, we've not looked the worst team in any of our games - in fact we've been downright unlucky at times - so with a full strength side and maybe another striker surely we're nailed on for automatic promotion.

As such, a player like Schweinsteiger would be earning a hefty bonus for dropping down a level for 12 months.

And it's not like he's got an immediate international spot to keep.

Pie in the sky but with Xia, the sky is not the limit.

Regarding Schwieinsteiger I am with Brendan Rodgers on that one and would prefer a player who can actually run?

As for the experience I still think that Leon Osman would be an excellent signing for us. good engine and a bit of creative flair?

The difference is De Laet scored a significant goal against us last season - therefore he must be crushed or assimilated.

What we must remember is that DeLaet is replacing two players who can't cross or defend so as long as he is good going forward and OK at defending we are onto a winner.

Striker and ACM please!!!! Hurry up Tony!!

Lets not get carried away here, yes he has class but in our situation will he make us better? I don't think so, I think he would just be coming for a big pay packet, he doesn't move about much in the prem, seems not interested so in the Championship he would be a passenger. Look elsewhere is my thought, we don't need another Richards, Lescot etc.

Check the vid below. Been reading some Leicester forums and this game sounds like it sums De Laet up....runs hot and cold.

3:05 thru to 4:30. Highlights De Laet fuck up.
8:40 His long ball puts Leicester thru to ultimately score.
42:20 Check the pace on him!
44:00 Steals the ball and sets up the goal.

Rather than Hutton where we can only show 90 minutes of fuck ups. There are very few full backs who are good going forward and defending? DeLaet is the best we will get and certainly better than Yedlin and is half the price?
