I've often wondered how many people new to this club (like Lerner and his band of failures and now Xia) have walked the halls of Villa, seen photos like this, looked at Little, looked back at the photo, back to Little and then just properly LOL'd.

Brian Little - if only for this photo (Terry Weir said it was the best photo he ever took) and for that haircut, which actually won an early uefa cup away leg on its own.

I'd have to say Ellis. I think both had the best interests of the club at heart and Ellis certainly had more of his own bests interests thrown into the mix (although you could argue that Lerner walked away with a much better sale price than Ellis and had the premier league winnings tucked into his pocket as well).

But in the end it was the ultimate lost money (needlessly lost money) and the utter incompetence shown by Lerner that makes me give Ellis the nod here. Old Uncle Doug knew that "an apple bought well is an apple half sold" and knew when to fire a manager. He knew that Steve Stride was the best football administrator in the country and used him well.

Lerner just hired fuckwits and ultimately let us sank.

Meanwhile, Doug had to sit in the stands and watch it all happen.

Same as Trotter's the way i compare Ellis to Lerner, it proves the best intentions in the world mean nothing as quite clearly the clueless one Lerner never meant to be a dumbass and waiste his money but for the way he kept cutting and cutting them wages and staying away as we slowly sank in misery then only selling us when we were down in my eyes is unforgivable,

Deadly in all fairness knew a good manager and my youth growing up was the Ellis years seeing us challenge for the Premiership beat Inter Milan win 2 league cups and some superb players like God Yorke Atkinson Merse etc oh and deadly invented the bicycle kick which tops anything else.

And he was the one that found Dwight Yorke as a youngster playing football on a beach in the West Indies.

Lerner might LOOK like the sort of weirdo that watches boys on a beach but Uncle Doug actually admitted to it.

I fucking hate Ellis - effed off Saunders and his outstanding team then did his best to erase them from our history,..and to top it all the cnut named the Witton Lane after himself - self centred, self promoting prick...I for one will party when he dies!

Sorry Trotters but we have an amazing history with some true legends who have gloriously represented our fine institution - of all of the people who the Witton Lane could be named after (not that it needed a new name!) and he choose himself!!!

For me that was the final nail.

Also, ask the class of '81/'82 what they think of him.

About 12 years ago I was having lunch in the old corner flag restaurant and in came Ellis and a few others for a business lunch. At 80ish years old I was shocked at how much presence and nimbleness there was to the man, he really was more like a fit 50 year old so I think the old dinosaur will out live us all.

He was a self made man who sort of had us holding our own occasionally but was the architect of our decline from the original super club, the best of the best, to the eventual shambles that Lerner left behind. It was Ellis that gave this vintage Rolls Royce to a silver spoon prick who turned it into a wreck.

However, there has to be a winner and Lerner is unforgivable for his actions so deadly wins.

I'm pretty sure the name was voted on and he didn't actually name it himself.

i think he had the best intentions at heart, but didn't have the ambition to go out of his safety zone. I think both he and Lerner were mixed bags as Lerner was superb in his first few years, then i blame the GFC and his divorce for him losing his desire.

For me its a tie.

I can see the older generations of Villans think differently mainly than the younger ones like myself about deadly which when hearing and learning about that legend 82 team and Saunders and what happend that has to be the most significent thing historically to have held our club back because we were ripe for dominating for a sustained period of time no doubt about it back then after the magnificent league and European cup win, so i totally get where others are coming from and why they will never forgive Ellis for what he did back then trouble is it was just before my knowing time as a Villan and us younger ones growing up saw us have top sides throughout the 90's then the last 6 years of Lerner were disgraceful,

I will add though i don't agree about Ellis causing Lerner's era to failure because the money Lerner ploughed in was enough to build us into a top side for years to come however the lack of thought planning and know how was his own demise in not being able to turn us into anything other than a club than flirted with the top four then became relegation fodder for 6 years and held onto our club far too long in not selling back when GH fell i'll imo is when he should have look to sell not many years later, i don't see how Ellis can be blamed for Lerner's killing off of our club and turning us into an embarrassment,

Two owner's who never took the club where we should have been but the younger generations looking at it will see Lerner as the bad one for relegation and 6 years of relegation battles something we younger ones never saw under Ellis tbh.

Them O'Neil days were terrific though wasn't they, seems a long time ago now but still see us signing Ash and Carew playing away at Newcastle and Jimmy signing with already Olof Laursen Freddy here we should have done far better shouldn't we.

Having chosen Ellis earlier I'm swinging back away from him. Lerner was just an incompetent idiot. Doug was a penny-pincher who knew what he was doing but had a vile streak and had little respect for our history.

Doug could've taken the European champs and turned them into a Liverpool-esque force. He sold them down the river. Prick.
