5-4? Blimey. This is going to be some game! Which means it won't be on Bein sport. The first time we're going to win a competitive game in what feels like 15 years, and I won't see it.
Fuck my life.

Think we'll win. But until I've seen anything from this squad that looks like good football I'm gonna put down a draw.

Re: Rotherham Match Thread
I think RDM got it wrong against Wednesday. When you come scrubs decent sides like that, you use midfielders who can open up space for strikers who can use their feet. That is, Grealish and anyome but Gestede.
Gestede is someone you pit in against a weaker side who will largely sit deep and give you no space to work in, causing you to lob balls into the box.
Hopefully he'll be able to identify which team is which and put out a side to suit.

Rotherham last season I'd say 4-0 (obviously not if we were villa from last season! ) but I think Stubbsy had got them more organised so 2-1 Villa win for me.

Another loss, 0-2 we are STILL a shambles and Rotherham are a million miles better than Luton.
All i see currently is we've sold some of our better players and not replaced them well enough if at all yet. The team is still littered with Sunday League mistakes and poor quality. We are 1-4 for the season so far against Sheff Weds and flipping Luton Town for goodness sake! Awful!

Any of the Rotherham management that watched that game last night will easily see that if you put a small amount of pressure on these jokers we have playing for us they fall to pieces and let in 3 goals.
This is the worst Villa team I have ever scene and it seems that no manager is capable of changers the fact that they are a bunch of gutless losers!
Rotherham for an easy win!

Pre - purge we are not ready to beat any organised and determined team.
Assuming that Rotherham match that description, another defeat is on the cards.

Re: Rotherham Match Thread
We had some good stuff going on against Wednesday, who aren't by any means a shabby team.
If RDM and Clarke have functioning eyes, they'll see Richards is better than Hutton, Amavi is better than Cissokho, Elphick and Gollini are essential for our defence (although I also thought Bunn played well) and we have no choice but to play Baker. McCormack and Ayew are definitely our best two attacking players (and Gestede needs to not start until he can get decent supply) and out of the rest, Tshibola, Green and Grealish all look good but not all three can play with two strikers and a lack of midfield enforcers.
Still, three out of four defenders, one goalie, two strikers and one midfielder is a start. It's just filling in the gaps that's a problem.
I consistently get my predictions wrong (last night was a comprehensive win ) so I'm going for a crushing loss to Rotherham.
You know, my geography of England is pretty good but I have no idea where Rotherham is...

Thinking mathematically for a sec...
If we're going to be droppin points until we get the players in that Xia has stated they're working on, just how many points can we afford to drop until we can forget about a playoff spot?
What's been the minimum number of wins to get one of those places over the last three seasons?
Because - and I'm making up numbers here - if we need 25 wins this season and we're throwing away what should be 3 pointers against the likes of Rotherham then odds are we could be out of the running before the end of September.
And I don't think I'm being pessimistic with that comment. After Luton, I'm wondering if that sugarbag Holloway isn't as wrong as we'd like to imagine.
A loss here and ugliness will sprout from everywhere. A win - even an undeserved, spawny, desperate win - might just be enough to change things.
Fucking hell.....2nd game in and I'm coming out with stuff like that. What a shit state this club is in right now.

Loads of time yet. I don't know about the best end of season run but 2 years ago Ipswitch started the season great - undefeated in September, November, and December, to be sitting in the playoffs only to lose as many as they won from January to May and finish 6th. 2nd half of their season was won 9, lost 9, drew 4

Brighton lost only 5 games last season and didn't make automatic promotion.

Re: Rotherham Match Thread
The last time Reading came up I went to about eight matches in the first half of the season. The seat was free but in the second row, next to the goal. The view was crap and they were lurking somewhere in the bottom half of the table, losing more often than not. I was there on Boxing Day in the freezing cold, wondering why I was bothering, and decided not to go back. I think they won almost all of their games in the second half of the season and ended up top and promoted.

Still think we will win - Im going 3-1
Loose to both Rotherham and Huddersfield and who knows what the hell will happen. When people scoffed at Dr Tony when he first announced his bold plans - he said something like
"People may Laugh I just get things done"
I don't think RDM will get away with "we always knew this was a big job" for very long...

Re: Rotherham Match Thread
I think 2-1 to us. Interesting to see RDM saying he's never experienced such a low level of confidence as he's seen at villa. I know we all know that but it kind of reinforces it when the manager states it openly. I still think we're gonna look panicky every time the opposition attacks until the balance of new players to old in the team shifts.

Re: Rotherham Match Thread
I just still don't think we're remotely close to seeing our main lineup to the season and are frankly in disarray still. Whether we have enough about us to beat Rotherham is debatable as every team with an iota of cohesion about them will be tough for us at this time. I have no doubt we have more quality overall than them but that is not translating to results at this time and i don't think it will for a while yet.
If we break down the various elements needed for promotion i would estimate something like this....
Team Quality = we are getting there (Top 8 & Improving) But still much to be done.
Tactics = Nowhere near yet as we still have players making debuts or on the way back from injury etc. (Lower half)
Confidence = very, very low. (Relegation levels)
Attitude = Improving but still a way to go yet..(Lower mid-table)
Potential = (Promotion candidates)
Infrastructure = (Premier League) developing rapidly under Xia.
Overseas network = poor but now developing under Xia, will gather pace as & when back in Premier League
Fanbase = (Premier League)
Overseas fanbase = Decent considering 3+ decades of underachievement since Euro champs.
Stadium = (Premier League)
Management team = (Premier League)
Coaching = Excellent on paper though still new.
Scouting = ????? Poor but awaiting recruits.
Training facilities = Top 6 Premier League quality
So it's all a bit up in the air in my book. Some good things, some great things and some shockingly poor things but for me with a few new recruits and finally getting some wins and confidence and things could pick up quite quickly.. It's just a matter of how quickly really as to whether we have a chance of promotion or not.
