ACON - Why ?
Why does such a tournament exist ?
And I don't get why we need to release our players for it, and indeed why they want to go ?
Its a little farty tournament, thats of no real interest to anyone - we should call our players back now !

Re: ACON - Why ?
Errm @smetro I think we may be punished if we pull back Kodjia and Ayew after they have been called up by their countries???
The AFCON is a joke and as it is now starting to affect teams like Manure maybe things will change? I think Blatter was always a big backer of this tournament as he relied on their votes to keep him in power? Now he has gone we will see a new attitude from FIFA on a tournament which runs during the busy period of the main leagues?

I don't get the problem? Africa has AFCON, South America has Copa América. Europe has EC.
A lot more people that are interested in AFCON than AVFC. That's for sure.

Agree. The AFCON is no less important than a COPA or a Euros.

That doesn't really come into it. Clubs know that, so when they buy an African national player they know that player will be gone most January's. It's been like this for quite some time, nothing new.

Re: ACON - Why ?
I would assume it would simply be too hot to play it over the summer being Africa based?

Re: ACON - Why ?
I think having it during the season should mean clubs are not obligated to release players to it. Especially as it is more reguar than the Euros.
But it's a legit tournament. Is it in January because otherwise it would clash with the WC every 2 years?

Mickey mouse tournament, watched by 30 or 40 people on a threadbare field - not televised because no ones interested. We will be releasing players for the bilston cup next

A tournament in Arica only played in by Africans too hot? Anyone who can't play footy in summer in Africa isn't African enough to play in the tournament to start with

I must say you're being extremely ignorant on this issue Smetro. Europeans have the Euros, South Americans have the Copa and Africa have the nations cup. Why should their competition be less important than anyone elses? We all just saw the Euro's and imo it was an absolute stinker...boring as f#ck and merely a haven for hooligans. Furthermore the ACON is moved around the continent and does get big crowds most of the time. If you actually watch African nations playing each other you'd see the crowds are legit.
We're all pissed off that Kodjia is gone but it is what it is!!..he's not gone for the rest of the season.

Move it to Europe in the summer and people would be far more interested!

Re: ACON - Why ?
There's no reason why Africa shouldn't have it's own tournament. It's a big deal over there and I'm sure for the most part the players look forward to representing their country in that tournament in the same, say English players or Italian players would look forward to representing their nationalities in the Euros. So if they want to go there's nothing to be done about it, nor should there be.
I'd hardly call it micky mouse either, I bet the better teams would give England a good game for example.
It is annoying that it falls in the middle of the season, but clubs know this when signing players.

Move it to bognor regis in october and Im sure it get more interest than it currently does. - and Less risk of landmines, or our player being kidnapped and held to ransom etc.

Didn't realise it was every 2 years! That smacks of Sepp Blatter but aside from that, I think it's fair that continent has it's own tournament.

Re: ACON - Why ?
Africa isn't the safest of places. Then again neither is south America, or Tukey, or the middle east...
Of course it is a legit tournament. It has been going longer than the Euros! The fact it is held in January and is every 2 years are legit gripes, slating it because it is held in African is bullshit

Don't think so, just somebody else at FIFA will be pocketing the brown envelopes/boxes!

No problem, the Bognor suggestion tickled me.

I don't think that some of the poorest FA's in the World were brown enveloping but they were certainly keeping Blatter in power when everything pointed to him being the most corrupt man on the planet? Their votes enabled Blatter to keep his power! He gave them a tournament every 2 years and a World Cup in SA?

The vast difference between the top and the bottom in these 'poor' countries is absolutely enormous, corruption is rife, as my stay in SA proved but lets move on as that would take a whole new thread and is totally depressing!

@Trotters to be honest I don't want to rehash it all as there was absolutely nothing I could do about it and it got me down as it was really frustrating!
The people that really mattered, the locals, were utterly fantastic, friendly people so down to earth, I am still in touch with a couple even now.
Take it from me we just don't realise just how lucky we all are!
Anyway enough, lets lighten it up!
